Mangaluru: Man trying to smuggle in a kg of gold arrested

Mangaluru, Oct 24: The customs officials at the international airport here have succeeded in thwarting an attempt made by a person to smuggle gold into the country in filmy style o n Monday October 23. They have arrested the person concerned.

The identity of the person so arrested has been given as Rafique Moideen (36) from Kasargod.

Moideen had filled plastic sachets with powdered gold and stuck the sachets all along his two legs by using gum. This plan is considered to be unique going by the methods so far adopted by various smugglers here. He would have gone unnoticed but for the fact that his behaviour gave rise to suspicion in the minds of customs officials. The officials then subjected him to detailed check after which the trick used by him to smuggle gold into India illegally was revealed.

The value of gold seized from his possession has been put at Rs 31,31,689.
