Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Nov 4: "Incidents of accidents of two-wheeler riders due to speaking over mobile phones is increasing. Suitable action will be taken after conducting thorough enquiry," said T R Suresh, Commissioner of Police. He was responding to a query by a lady, at the police phone-in programme, in his office on Friday, November 3.

A lady brought to the notice of the Commissioner, a recent incident in which a two-wheeler rider, who was speaking on his mobile phone, hit his scooter to a child near Highland. The child is severely injured and will have to be at home for more than three months, she said.

In addition, complaints like two-wheeler riders not wearing helmets, triple riding on bikes, youngsters driving two-wheelers without licence while going for tuitions near Attavar New Road and driving from the wrong side were also raised at the programme.

Responding to a complaint about the traffic jam that is caused at KPT and Town Hall junctions due to the stopping of vehicles by police, Manjunath, Inspector, traffic north police station, said, "New Mangalore Port Trust has come forward to sponsor 'public address system' (PA) at Panamboor junction. We will fix PA systems in junctions where sponsors are available and the same will be installed by the police department at junctions where the sponsors are not available,” he said.

Request was also made to appoint police personnel at the entrance gate of Infant Jesus shrine at Bikkarnakatte in the wake of the recent accident in which a devotee lost her life while crossing the road. Complaint was also raised against Naveen the owner of route 4D bus, about running only one bus, though having permit for two buses. The Commissioner assured the complainant that the licence of the bus in question will be cancelled if the owner does not start the second bus for public use.

This was the 62nd police phone-in programme, in which 28 calls were received. Deputy Police Commissioners Uma Prashant and Hanumantharaya, Assistant Commissioner of Police (traffic and crime) Manjunatha Shetty, Assistant Commissioner of Police Valentine D'Souza, Inspectors Suresh Kumar, Manjunath and Mohammed Sharif, Assistant sub-inspector Yousuf were present.

Two wheeler drivers using cellphones while driving are common occurrences. No doubt that there is a prevailing law that cell phones cannot and should not be used while driving. However the law has not be very strictly enforced.

The present Traffic Warden Squad is doing a good job. The Traffic Wardens are commonly seen during peak hours in places like Nanthoor, Kankanady junction, Hampankatta, Kadri junction and at Bendoorwell. More members are joining the squad and indeed they would be a great help to The Police Department.

Deputy Police Commissioners Madam Uma Prashant and Mr. Hanumantharaya, Assistant Commissioner of Police (traffic and crime) Manjunatha Shetty, Assistant Commissioner of Police Valentine D'Souza, Inspectors Suresh Kumar, Manjunath and Mohammed Sharif, Assistant sub-inspector Yousuf are indeed rendering yeoman service. It is the public who should now readily cooperate with the department and strictly observe traffic rules.

    1. Many city buses faulty or no break lights.

    2. Many do not use indicators.
    3. Diesel vehicles , namely buses are chief contributors of air pollutants. There is rto bus lobby nexus in getting pollution certificate.
    4. many 2 wheeler riders insert phone into their helmets and talk.
    5. Many auto drivers run their vehicle with kerosene oil. Full of smoke.
At least by 20 years our life span gets shortened because of vehicular smoke
According to the estimates , 18 lakh people died in India in 2015 alone due to vehicular smoke. As buses are main contributors of the same , their pollution control will save several crores in health costs.

It makes me laugh whenever there is a talk of safety.

First and the most obvious thing... pretty easy to catch and fine... Buses without doors!!!!! Just how many people need to fall out before this is implemented. Just watch the buses during morning commute.... students literally hanging by the railing.

Next... what about potholes( or as some people call it natural speed breakers, spine breakers or like takers??? when will those be repaired??

Speed breakers.... again ... if you miss potholes you surely won't miss these. That too unmarked once.

There are no proper footpaths. there are some but not continuous. some have huge gaping holes for unlucky once to fall into it.

Now regarding the buses... please bring a rule that buses cannot change lanes. they should be forced to use only one lane. And impose heave fines( not rs1000, but rs 100000 for each offence) That will slow them down.

Also jaywalkers should also be heavily fined or thrown in jail for a day or two.

There is not much we can do regarding safety wise ... simply because our roads are designed incorrectly(average IQ in India is about 85... which is pretty low and hinders any progress). There should be minimum three lanes... one for buses/heavy vehicles, the middle one for cars, and a fast lane for emergency services which can by used by cars when not used by emergency services.

Finally, i want to say is that there should be some consistency in rules.

Talking on mobile devices while driving is regarded as "dangerous" driving in many countries and it is time that it is banned in India as well. They cause many accidents and are one of the biggest causes of road fatalities especially dangerous to pedestrians. The police commissioner should act fast but before doing so he should ensure that he has the legal power to do so under the Highway Traffic laws.

Police commissioner must act not only words or leave them on receiving bribe!!! Count the number of accidents and death in Mangalore n Udupi districts!!?? What action has been taken to reduce accidents or death??? Indian Traffic laws only for the poor and rich bribe the cops or political connection escape the law!!! If the Police act according to law Govt. can earn huge amount of fine and penalty.for various traffic violations. Drunk driving, driving without license by childrens and telephones use, lane crossing etc are common everywhere and police don't bother at all. We don't care human loss but do care animals!!!???

Yes, everytime we hear from police commissioner that they will catch and punish the vehicle drivers when they talk on mobile while driving, but no police officer ever catch a driver who talks while driving. I have seen many bus drivers city as well long distance buses are busy on phone while driving.
These drivers think they are masters of the road and they can drive the vehicle with closed eyes.our law makers are wise but implementors are worst category.when you catch a culprit, and the culprit shake hands with big note, they are left with a smile and a salute.

What about the parking of cars and auto's on footpaths. Working on the footpath one place I notice a number of shops working on the footpath are the tenants of the Church Building at Kodiabail.
Cars with tinted car glass Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia directed police officers to remove the tinted glass in 2012. But now we see so many cars in Mangalore with tinted car glass. Only in 2012 the police were active. The police only nab the motorbike rider without helmet.
What about our city buses which stop anywhere? The drivers will stop anywhere to pick passengers.
Our zebra crossings are all gone needs to be painted for a few months. Few roads are in a bad shape.

    Dear Police Commissioner
How about port holes, on roads.
How about rash driving bus drivers , no one in police have guts to control them.
how about non functioning tragic lights.
How about poor design of roads and roads without footpath.
Use of mobile phones while driving is a disease please heal them.
Students in kanknady and attavar require extra policing.

If our Police are more active then everything can be controlled. These bus drivers first make friendship of Police personal who are on traffic duty , because of friendship, they can not take action with bus drivers. That is our traffic system has spoiled.

Use of mobile phones while driving should be completely banned. Heavy fines should be imposed for the first offense and if repeated their license should be revoked. Many lives have been lost and many seriously injured.

Appreciate swift action on public vehicles. Financial returns are very promising.

Commissioner if a 2 wheelers can be traced so easily how come the City busses ignored.

Trained and successful officers may please practice justice atleast to young students. Busses during the peak hours consider anywhere n everywhere as their Bus stops. They speed and overtake and do not follow any safety or road rules.
