Mangaluru: KMC Hospital performs surgery for left-sided malpositioned gallbladder

Media Release

Mangaluru, Feb 10: KMC Hospital proved its medical prowess and excellence by scripting a technically demanding surgery of left sided malpositioned gall bladder removal in a patient. The patient was also having a rare condition called situsinversustotalis where the normal arrangement of internal organs is in a reversed condition. This demanding surgery was performed by Dr Satyanarayana N, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and minimally invasive surgeon, KMC Hospital that put an end to the suffering of the patient from the past one year.

The patient came to KMC Hospitals with complaints of acute abdominal pain and in a critical condition. Post examination, she was diagnosed with a condition called acute cholecystitis which is an infection of gallbladder and pus formation due to multiple accumulations of gall stones. The patient was recommended to undergo a gallbladder removal surgery by laparoscopy.

However, the complication in this case was the reversal of the organs inside the patient’s body. It is a rare developmental abnormality where in all the organs are in the reverse side as compared to where it generally is in a typical human body. Her heart was present in the right side; her gall bladder was on the left side whereas in a normal case it would be the other side.

Revealing details, Dr Satyanarayana N, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and minimally invasive surgeon, KMC Hospital, said, “We performed minimally invasive surgery on the patient and hence the recovery was faster, incisions were smaller, the surgery was less painful and blood loss was minimal. These reverse sided organs are typically complicated to be operated on since the surgeon needs to reorient and operate on rotated organs. The surgeons have to be aware of the malposition and the trauma involved. It is technically demanding and requires expertise in handling such cases.”

Dr Anand Venugopal, medical superintendent, said, “The case was challenging and complicated as situsinversus is found in about one person in 10,000 and it involves complete transposition (right to left reversal) of all of the abdominal organs. Hence, the surgeon needs to perform the usual surgery with precision. KMC Hospital has the most advanced gastro and liver surgery expertise in terms of technology and expert team.”

The gallbladder is a small pear-shaped organ that helps store bile, and digests food. When the gallbladder fails to function properly, or the bile content goes out of balance, hard fragments start to form. These fragments can be as small as a grain of rice or as big as a golf ball. Since gallstones do not go by themselves and they have potential complications like pus formation and future cancer risks, there is a requirement of surgical intervention. If it starts to hurt or cause other symptoms, the doctor decides to remove your gallbladder with a procedure called laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and it is the most common surgery for gallbladder complications.
