Mangalore, Aug 12: The fishing season has started officially on Monday, August 11. The fishermen are headed towards deep sea fishing after a 57-day rest on the shore.
Meanwhile, the volatile climate has left fishermen in high and dry as fishing in deep sea during heavy rain and gales is a difficult and dangerous task. As the fish are in regeneration during the monsoons, there is prohibition on fishing activities from June 15 to August 10 so as to protect the fisheries resources under the Karnataka Coastal Fisheries Control Act.
As many as 5,000 machine boats from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have gone into the sea in hopes of making up for losses suffered in the last season.
