Udupi, Mar 28: ‘World Water Day 2018’ was observed at the auditorium of Mount Rosary church, Santhekatte here on Tuesday, March 27. The event was organized to spread awareness about rain water harvesting and water preservation for future.
The programme was organised by district legal services authority Udupi in association with Mount Rosary Church parent board Santhekatte, Kallianpur, led by resource person Joseph G M Rebello.
Chief justice of Udupi and session court, president of district legal services authority T Venkatesh Nayak inaugurated the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, T Venkatesh Nayak said, “Global warming, environmental pollution, deforestation and tube-wells have resulted in scarcity of water. Water is the beginning and also the end. Wise usage of water could save it for the future. Ninety-nine per cent of water cannot be used directly. No one is committed to save water. It is our duty to save water. There is lack of knowledge about law, though Udupi is a known as literate and intelligent district.”
Speaking about increasing number of accidents in the locality, he said, “Highest number of accidents is being reported these days because of drink and drive. License is mandatory for all vehicle drivers. Do not give vehicles to minors,” he urged the parents.
Senior civil judge Latha released an informative letter on water conservation. Addressing the gathering, she said, “Earlier people did not know about the scarcity of water. Water crisis has begun due to globalization, urbanization and deforestation. This programme is being organized to create awareness about law and pressing need of conserving water so that we can lead peaceful life.”
CEO of zilla panchayat Udupi Shivanada Kapashi said, “We are moving towards extreme condition day by day while considering the circumstances of earth and atmosphere. Population has been increasing when comparing to animal species. Balanced growth between humans and creatures is necessary. People have started thinking that the earth
belongs to them alone. Let us adopt a nature friendly life style and adequately change our life style. People should avoid the use of human made things for better future.”
Fr Dr Leslie D’Souza of Mount Rosary Church, Santhekatte presided over the programme. While speaking to the gathering, he said, “Our selfishness is the reason behind the problems we face today. Hence the whole programme is designed to create awareness about saving water.”
Fr Clany D’Souza, assistant parish priest and Ronald Saldanha, chief secretary of Mount Rosary Church, Santhekatte were the main guests.
Mohan Raj, assistant agriculture director and CEO of Udupi taluk panchayat, Baptist Dias, farmer and vice-president, Mount Rosary Church, Santhekatte, H Rathnakar Shetty, president, Bar Association, Udupi, and Nagaraj Varkady, convenor, press club Udupi were present.
Church parish pastoral council members and economy committee members of Mount Rosary Church, Santhekatte were also present.
Resource person Joseph G M Rebello organized the entire programme and showed a PPT presentation on rain water harvesting. Water saviors were honoured on the occasion for their noble cause.
