Mangaluru: Traffic woes, private bus issues dominate police phone-in programme

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Apr 14: As many as 19 callers from across the city expressed their concerns during the 78th police phone-in programme at police commissioner's office here on Friday, April 13. Most of the complaints related to parking violations, non-issue of tickets in buses and so on.

A caller from Bikarnakatte complained about vehicles being parked on the roadside near Infant Jesus Church which creates inconvenience to pedestrians and also leads to traffic issues in the area. Police commissioner T R Suresh said, "We will serve notice to vehicle owners for parking in the said area."

A caller from Talapady complained that barricades put up at Talapady check post lead to traffic chaos in the area. The police commissioner justified the act and said that the installation of barricade had helped in reduction of accidents in the area.

On a caller’s request for speed-breakers at Buntara Bhavana road, the police commissioner said that the area would be inspected and if required, speed-breakers would be installed.

A caller from Panjimogaru complained that he had boarded a prepaid auto from Kankanady railway station, but was charged above the meter reading and was issued a receipt for the same. Police commissioner T R Suresh said, "Send us the receipt to our WhatsApp number we will take stringent action against the auto-rickshaw driver.”

A caller from Yedapadav complained that pimps roam near Lady Goschen Hospital and tease girls in the vicinity. Liquor is being sold at a general store and which is supplied through an auto-rickshaw. The police commissioner assured to look in to the matter.

A caller from Kulai complained that police that has been deployed at check post ahead of state elections for checking vehicles focus on two-wheeler riders who do not wear helmets and ignore cars and other vehicles. Police commissioner T R Suresh said, "There is no rule that they have to focus only cars. They can check even the two-wheelers."

DCP Hanumantharaya, DCP Uma Prashanth, ACP Manjunath Shetty and others were present.

The worst offenders are buses, rickshaws and two wheelers. The bus drivers are arrogant and sometimes rude. They feel that they have a strong union to protect them.

It is time that The Police Department comes down heavily on the offending bus drivers and conductors.

It is good to see that The Commissioner of Police, the two deputy commissioners ad the A.C.P. are taking keen interest in setting matters right. However this not going to be an easy task as the difficult situation has been existing for decades.

Kudos to the officers for taking keen interest in helping the public.

Joe Gonsalves, Mangalore you missed the car drivers (private and taxi) think that there is no rule for them. Car drivers we see them using their mobiles as is they own the road. The light motor vehicle drivers park their vehicle any were they find some place even on the footpath meant for pedestrians. Turn any were they want. Even drive on the wrong side of the road.

What are the traffic police doing no Police on K.S. Rao road to see if any vehicles parked on the footpath. Even opposite Ocean Pearl cars parked on the footpath till PVS junction.

Pedestrians are forced to walk on the road hence risking their lives. Traffic Police only targeting two wheeler riders, we all know for what mostly for not wearing a helmet this is because the helmet manufactures give something to the law makers, but nothing is got by fining the cars parked on the footpaths in Mangalore.

Regarding the conductors issuing tickets most of the city buses do not issue tickets. What is the RTO doing? The private bus mafia should be abolished then see Mangalore would be a better place to travel.

Instead of introducing buses on same busy routes, introduce buses on new routes. For instance there is no direct bus to Surathkal, MRPL or Bajpe for people residing at Kulai Gudde, Honnakatte areas. There should be buses on such routes.

Parking near Infant Jesus Church is much better than that near the Don Bosco Hall to Hampankatta or that from Balmatta circle to Jyothi circle

Traffic police have only few universal solutions to solve traffic issues.

Go on putting "no parking" sign boards all over the city so that every inch of parking place that is remaining is blocked. They do not have a reply to question "where should I park?". That is not their responsibility.

Go on converting roads to one ways. Let the public suffer, who cares?

No one is responsible for preventing vehicles driving in opposite side, stopping in busy streets (especially buses) causing blockage, two wheelers parking in spaces meant for four wheelers, vehicles taking sharp right turns without maintaining simple rule of "keep left", and so on.

If simple control is exercised on lane changing, the traffic speed can be doubled. Unfortunately in Mangalore the driver has to watch out for lane changing, overtaking from wrong side, human being crossing, vehicles crossing main roads, animals crossing etc. How can one drive fast if he has to do so many things simultaneously?

Recently a number of devider poles have been fixed at junctions to improve traffic sense of keep-left. But no one is booked for violating the rules. Two and three wheelers cross in between such poles.

So far I have not seen any improvement in traffic system. Shift the SBI bus stand to Pumpwell. Then ban horns for Buses and Trucks. In the city limit. Otherwise so far this Phone in Programme has not achived any any thing.
