Mangalore: Compensation Sought for Deceased Girl’s Family

The Hindu

Mangalore, Sep 2: A group of activists, who are said to have allegiance with the Akhil Bharat Vidyarthi Parishad, blocked the traffic movement at Hampankatta here on Monday, in protest against the death of a girl, who tried to commit suicide, allegedly owing to negligence of the staff of Father Muller’s Hospital, Kankanady. A minor girl from Manjeshwar in Kerala had attempted to commit suicide by consuming kerosene. She died at the hospital on Sunday.

Police action

The agitation is said to have followed an attack on the hospital, allegedly by the Bajrang Dal and the Sri Ram Sene activists on Sunday night. The protestors had reportedly parked an ambulance with the body of the girl at the circle. Police personnel, however, ordered the body to be taken away, and managed to disperse the activists. Franklin Montiero, claiming allegiance to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), warned the hospital authorities of intensifying the agitation if a suitable compensation was not given to the family of the deceased. He dismissed the reported allegations of communal forces being involved in the protest as unfounded.

Separate incident

In a separate incident, another group of activists, reportedly belonging to sangh parivar, is said to have barged into the Kasturba Medical College Hospital at Aattavara and protested against the alleged attempt by the hospital authorities to fleece a patient. Police said the mob dispersed after hospital authorities agreed to waive part of the charges.

In simple language the protestors have nothing in the head absolutely. An anonymous person commits suicide for his/her own personal reason why should the hospital compensate? If they reject better facilities owing to financial crunch, the hospital cannot be made scapegoat. If this is the case, the government has to subsidize medicine and give aid to the hospitals. It is nothing but revengeful and malicious action of the goons.

Many of the readers in their comments yesterday suggested to others not to give this incident a communal tone. Now we know for sure that this was indeed a communal incident, where members of the fundamentalist group are responsible for the damage done to the property of Fr Mullers Hospital. These goons can ask their own government which is running the show today to pay compensation to the girl's family.

The relatives of the girl did not heed medical advice and were not interested in saving the girl's life, and these goons are demanding compensation from the hospital. I fail to understand the logic here. It looks as if these people have totally lost their mental balance and so should be institutionalised immediately.

Franklin Monteiro before asking Hospital to compensate use your head & know that Hospital Authorities did not gave kerosene to the girl & She wanted to die & now for what reason you want hospital to compensate let the parents of the Girl pay to the Hospital else If you want that much publicity call the media & you pay the compensation for all the families who do sucide.

Those farmers who commit suicide get compensation. Why not others? If we cannot get from the government why not from the hospitals where we admit the half dead people who wanted to die for their own reasons? This is the modern world, there is no question of right or wrong. We are leading Our younger generation straight to the hell. What are we up to? At whose cost?
