Victory in Vienna - India Gets NSG Waiver

PTI

Vienna, Sep 6:
The Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) on Saturday granted India a crucial waiver that will enable it to carry out nuclear commerce, ending 34 years of isolation enforced in the wake of the 1974 Pokharan nuclear tests.

The unprecedented decision of the 45-nation nuclear cartel giving exemption to a country which has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) is a landmark step in the implementation of the Indo-US nuclear deal that will now go to the US Congress for approval.

"After protracted negotiations, the NSG today adopted an exemption for nuclear exports to India," the Austrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"There is a sense of relief. I am particularly happy that the waiver (for India) meets with international nuclear non-proliferation architecture," Peter Launsky, Austrian foreign ministry spokesman said after an unscheduled meeting of the NSG here.

Austria, along with Ireland, New Zealand and Switzerland had expressed strong reservations over the waiver being given to India that forced the grouping to have an unscheduled meeting on Saturday after two days of deliberations failed to produce a consensus.

A very good assessement of the situation i feel. Even I think this was a great victory for the country.I fully agree with your views that the politics of vote banks is taking the country deep in to a slumber.

Thankfully we had the usa support to pass this deal thru for us.If not for the tough stance of USA this deal would not happened - as I read in the editorial - when the deal was passed - there was not clap from the members present - this shows the opposition of lot of countries to India coming into this elite group. I guess this is a begining of new political resurgence in the country.Three cheers to Manmohan Singh.

Great news.Congratulations to all those Indian scientists who are/were associated with nuclear research and development in our country.Congratulations to Mrs Indira Gandhi and Vajpai for conducting nuclear tests, eventhough India was banned all these years from importing any nuclear materials all these years because of nuclear tests.

Also, congratulations to Mr.Manmohan Singh and team for withstanding the severe objections for nuclear agreement and getting clearance from NSG. Now it is only formality remaining - clearance from US Congress.

IT IS A GREART DAY FOR INDIA&INDIA SHINING!THANKS FOR FORMER PM ATALJI&BRIJESH MISHRA WHO INITIATED THIS MOVE 8YRS BACK, PM MANMOHAN&PRANAB MUKHERJEE HADTO PASS THROUGH VERY TOUGH TIME FOR STEERING THE DEAL TO THIS STAGE.INDIA HAS TODAY NO OPTION BUT TO OPT FOR NUCLEAR ENERGY BECAUSE OTHER ALTERNATIVE EFFORDABLE COAL BASED THERMAL POWER IS DEFINITELY NOT ECO FRIENDLY WE SAW THE BATTLE IN NANDIKUR, HYDRO POWER IS CLEAN &CHEAP BUT SEVERAL VILLAGES WILL BE SUBMERGED&REHABILITATION OF DISPLCED PERSONS FROM WATWR RESERVOIR IS UNACCEPTABLE TO PUBLIC, WE SAW IT IN NARMADA PROJECT EXECUTION! AS ON TODAY GAS BASED PROJECT IN INDIA IS NOT VIABLE DUE TO COST. COST OF POWER PER UNIT ABOUT RS 20/UNIT, WHICH WE SAW IT IN RATNAGIRI, DABOL&THANNERBAVI PROJECT OF MANGALORE PROJECT.SOLAR ENERGY OR WIND POWER IS NOT AT ALL CAPABLE OF PRODUCING THOUSANDS OF MEGAWATTS.POLITICIANS LIKE MANORAMA MADWARAJ TALK ABOUT WIND POPWER OR SOLAR ENERGY AS ALTRNATIVE. PL SYMPATHISE FOR THEIR IGNORANCE &LACK OF KNOWLEDGE&BUT FULL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT VOTE NANK POLITICSONLY IRRESPECTIVE GOOD OR BAD FOR THE COUNTRY OR SOCIETY,THAT IS ALL!!!!!!! TODAY OUR COUNTRY'S SHORTAGE OF POWER IS ABOUT 100000 MEGAWATTS .NO COUNTRY WILL BE PROSPOROUS WITH OUT POWER,GOOD ROADS, &CLEAN WATER, WE UNFORTUNATELY LACK IN ALL THIS.WHEN FRANCE ,UK& OTHER ADVANCED COUNTRIES CAN PRODUCE MAJORITY POWER FROM NUCLEAR ENERGY,WHY NOT INDIA.WE HAVE BEST OF BEST SCIENTISTS, ENGINEERS, & TECHNITIANS, WE CAN BECOME NUCLEAR ENERGY&FUEL SUPERPOWER IN THE NEAR FUTURE USING OUR OWN ABUNDANT THORIUM&URANIUM RAWMATERIALS.JUST TRY TO REMEMBER THIS MESSAGE AFTER 5 YEARS.OURS IS POWER HUNGRY COUNTRY & LET US SUPPORT THE PROCESS OF COMING OUT OF IT!!!!!!

The NSG waiver despite the reservations of several countries is indeed a great victory for India and the greeter credit should go to Dr.Manmohan Singh who despite all hurdles imposed by the blind opposition , overcame them and emerged victorious. The true meaning of this historic deal will unfold in the years to come and the benefits will eventually be felt by the common man . Most importantly, it should herald an long era of peace in the region, as India will command greater respect from the immediate neighbouring countries who will have to treat India as a friend in their future progress.
