Bantwal, May 21: Police on Sunday May 20 arrested six persons in connection with the clashes that took place under Vittal police station limits on Saturday May 19 as well as for spreading fake messages WhatsApp.
The arrested have been identified as Mohammed Tameem (28), Abdul Rahiman (35), Mohammed Zakaria (25), and Sulaiman Vakaitturu (38). All are residents of Vittal and have been arrested for violating Section 144 and for rioting.
Two out of the six have been arrested for spreading false message on WhatsApp with the intention of inciting communal violence.
They have been identified as Dinesh alias Dayanand (31), a resident of Pambethadi near Panja in Sullia taluk and Nitin, a resident of Kerale of Bantwal taluk. They have been booked under IPC sections 153(a) and 295(a).
Clashes broke out in Kelinja in Vittal on the night of Saturday May 19 after Congress workers celebrated the resignation of BJP's B S Yeddyurappa's resignation as chief minister. They shouted slogans against BJP, and BJP workers too retaliated with anti-Congress slogans. Four persons were injured in the incident. At the same time, fake messages went viral in WhatsApp claiming there was communal violence in Bantwal. SP Ravikanthe Gowda took immediate measures to ensure peace and warned that anyone circulating fake messages to incite trouble would face strong action.
As per details, Dayanand forwarded a message with offensive remarks about a community. The message was sent after a tussle took place between two political parties at Kelinja in Vittal on Saturday.
The incident was purely a clash between Congress and BJP workers in which four persons were injured. But Dayanand sent the message with gave the incident, a communal colour. The message also talked ill about a particular community.
Superintendent of police Ravikanthe Gowda has already warned about sending sensitive messages.
