Tumakuru, May 22: After a private bus hit a stationary truck on national highway 48 on the outskirts of Sira town in the district at around 11 pm on Sunday May 20, seven passengers of the bus lost their lives. The accident also resulted in injuries to over 25 persons.
The private bus was carrying pilgrims who were returning to Sira after visiting Goddess Chowdeshwari temple at Sigandur. The deceased were Savita (21), Ratnamma (38), Sumalata (21), Anusha (7), and Girijamma (50) from Pattanayakanahalli village, as well as Shankar (35) and Ashwathnarayana (40) from Sira.
25 injured persons who got initial treatment at the taluk government hospital here, stand admitted into different hospitals at Tumakuru and Bengaluru. All the injured belong to Sira and Pattanayakanahalli.
The bus had been booked to take devotees to a temple in Sigandur, Sagar taluk, Shivamogga district. The bus was on its return journey to Sira and was just three kilometres away from its final destination when it met with an accident. The front left portion of the bus was badly mangled in the accident.
Immediately on learning about the accident, officials of the town police station rushed to the spot, sent injured persons to hospitals, cleared the vehicles which were obstructing traffic, and paved way for resumption of traffic.
A case was registered in the town police station and investigation was undertaken.
