Mangalore, Sep 13: The district unit of the BJP undertook a fund raising campaign in the city to collect money for flood victims of Bihar, on Friday September 12.

The fund mobilization drive began from the district headquarters of the BJP, located near PVS circle. District BJP president Monappa Bhandary inaugurated the drive by donating cash.

City mayor Ganesh Hosabettu, deputy mayor Shakeela Kava, corporators Ashwin Kumar, Mohan Padil, James D'Souza, and other BJP leaders participated in the effort. The fundraisers passed through Bunts Hostel and Ambedkar Circle collecting  donations from  generous pedestrians, motorists, commuters, shop owners et al.

The Kosi River, having changed its course, has caused havoc all over Bihar especially in the districts of Saharsa, Madhepura, Purnea, Khagaria, and Katihar. According to official estimates, at least 50 people have perished in the floods, although NGOs assisting in rescue operations fear that the deaths could be in hundreds.

More than 3.3 million people have been affected by rising floods and rescue efforts have been hampered owing to lack of access to more than 1,800 villages across 16 districts in the ravaged state. Nearly 100,000 hectares of farmland lies submerged and nearly 300,000 houses damaged across the region. Flood victims are in desperate need of blankets, utensils, milk powder, glucose supplements, and medicines.
