Mangaluru, May 30: Due to the incessant rains that lashed the city on Tuesday, May 29, four feet of rainwater got accumulated in Bhojarao Lane in Kudroli. The students of Gujarati English Medium School, which is situated on this lane, were frightened as they were not able to return home due to the stagnate rainwater on the road. Fire service personnel were able to rescue the children only through the boat.

Most of the roads in and around Kudroli lost the contact with other roads due to the heavy rain. Sharathchandra Kamath, a local resident, called the WhatsApp helpline and conveyed the message that the students of Gujarati School are not able to reach their homes due to the artificial flood that is created on the road. The issue was brought to the notice of Vipul Kumar, police commissioner, immediately. He instructed the police officers to rush to the rescue of children.

Panic among parents

As there was water-logging on the street of the school, the teachers did not send the students back to home, though a holiday was declared to the school. The parents also could not reach the school as they were not able to negotiate the artificially flooded street. There was a panic situation during this time in parents of the children. The main reason for Tuesday's situation is the work of Kudroli drain. Work related to the open drain is going on for few months, but water is not flowing properly. The underground drainage system also is not working properly. Both these issues have contributed to the panic situation that occurred on Tuesday, May 29.
