Mangaluru, Jun 1: "Public interest litigations (PIL) are meant for serving the interests of exploited and weaker sections of the society that are deprived of justice. Of late, there is a tendency to file PILs for even vested interests and insignificant issues," the state high court observed on Thursday May 31.

A local, Hanumanth Kamath, had filed PIL in the high court, alleging that the wife of former MLA, Mohiuddin Bava, had constructed a building illegally in survey No. 48/8P of Iddya village near the city without obtaining any permission for the same. He also alleged that by using her influence, she had obtained licence for the said building from the city corporation. He also had complained that the officials have not been taking any action even after filing complaints about this irregularity.

The division bench of the high court comprising chief justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice B S Patil, which conducted hearing of the PIL, expressed strong resentment about this litigation. The bench said that scope of PILs is being transgressed of late, and said that this trend is not right and courts do not approve them. It said that there is a need to spread awareness about this issue among the people. Observing that the PIL in question does not have any public interest in it, it dismissed it.
