Mangaluru, Jun 2: The 12 BJP legislators who were recently elected from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have evinced interest in unitedly fighting for winning a slot for Tulu language in the eighth schedule of Indian Constitution. They have made up their mind to win rightful place for their language in the constitution.
Tulu has been waiting for this honour since the last seven decades, and the people feel that this is the right time for the elected representatives to put their weight behind this demand and make this happen as BJP is in power at the centre now.
It is learnt that these 12 legislators had recently met to discuss important demands and problems concerning the twin-districts. During these discussions, sources said that the issue of bringing Tulu under the ambit of eighth schedule of the constitution also was discussed.
With the recent achievement of revision of Tulu dictionary, recording of Paddanas and other cultural heritage things and others and also their translation to other languages, there has been an added thrust for the language's chance of being included in the eighth schedule. MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel, says that already this issue has been taken up in the Lok Sabha and that this proposal is before home minister, Rajnath Singh, now. He feels that the state government too has to bring pressure on the issue to make further progress.
The time now is ideal as BJP has registered tremendous victory in coastal Karnataka and this party currently is in office at the centre. The MLAs plan to meet Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and place before him a forceful demand for giving official status to Tulu language by including it in the eighth schedule.
If this effort succeeds, the party leaders will get an achievement they can take credit of during Lok Sabha election campaign next year, thereby turning the tide again in the saffron party's favour. The delegation to be led to New Delhi is also proposed to have Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari, Dr D Veerendra Heggade, and Tulu Sahitya Academy president, A C Bhandary and other eminent personalities as its members.
