The meteorological department has predicted that the areas in Karnataka coast are likely to get heavy rainfall from June 7 onwards and floods from June 10 onward on account of advancing monsoon.

In his tweet, Jatin Singh, chief executive officer of Skymet Weather Services said that Mumbai will get rain from June 6, and the rainfall will turn into torrential rainfall from June 8 to 10. He has advised people to stay indoors during this period.

This time, monsoon had entered Kerala three day earlier on May 29, and had also caused rainfall in Tamil Nadu through Bay of Bengal.

In the meanwhile, surface whirlwind that is building in Konkanl and Goa regions is expected to pass through Maharashtra coast, which might intensify the affects of the monsoon. As a result, some parts of Gujarat are also likely to get rain.

Secretary in the department of earth sciences, M Rajeevan, also said that monsoon will gain in intensity after June 7, resulting in heavy rainfall. He said that flood may be experienced in Kerala and Karnaka coasts after June 10.

Kind request to CM Kumaraswamy and local MPs Nalin Kumar and Shobha. Please use your ideas and power and take rapid action to make the drainage system very perfect like cities of western countries. Make this happen very very soon all over Mangaluru and Udupi and see that rain water will not flow on roads. Kumaranna, Nalin Sir, Shobha madam, please please make this happen very very soon during this rain season only.

Rain water has three routes to clear from the ground
    - Draining through the canals and joining river or sea.
    - Passing through the soil surface directly into the ground
    - Evaporating into the air.

In Mangalore we have seen the rain storm drains and canals have become narrower or completely blocked due to the construction of the buildings and concrete roads. Those canals need to be cleared and widened.
Second and more important problem is that the ground surface area which is covered by soil has reduced drastically in the last 30 years. Every small land inside the city has been used to construct apartment buildings and even the little area of land around the building up to the wall is covered by interlocking tiles. The roads are also covered completely by concrete . To compensate for the loss of soil surface which can absorb rain water, we need much bigger drainage canals canals.
I feel it may be better to construct taller buildings and leave a larger area of open land around the building with garden or play ground covered by soil.

Is it really true ? Because so far the Met dept predictions have been not reliable. We have been hearing about Monsoon entry into coast from May 31st on wards but except for one day heavy rain there is no rain at all so far.

People... be responsible. All the soil that you have kept open after construction work or other digging activities, please either cover it, place bounding around it or remove it because it flows into the drains and clogs them.

Blaming the government and its services is easy but we too need to clean up after us.
