Udupi: Journalists observe World Environmental Day

Udupi, Jun 5: District Working Journalists Association in association with Information and Broadcasting department and Forest department celebrated World Environmental Day at Saalumarada Thimmakka tree park, Manipal on Tuesday, June 5. District superintendent of police Laxman Nimbargi was the chief guest. He inaugurated the programme by planting saplings.

Addressing the gathering, SP Laxman Nimbargi said, “On this day, we need to think about the past, present and future of environment. Environmental pollution started due to industrialisation and excess consumption of natural recourses. This resulted in less rain, global warming and many other environmental imbalances.

“In the recent days, we have been thinking seriously about the protection of nature. This celebration should not be only for a day. In western countries, environmental protection has become a part of people’s lives. Increase in consumption of plastic is also dangerous to the environment,” he said.













Clifford Lobo, district forest officer said, “Soldiers protect the country from external terror, likewise forest department protects the forest inside the nation’s boundary. In Karnataka, 21.5% is forest area. In Udupi district, we have planted 8,20,000 saplings and have distributed 1,50,000 saplings to public. Yearly, we use 50,000 crore ton of plastic all over the world. This time, India is observing World Environment Day with the aim of reducing the use of plastic.”

Saplings were distributed to reporters present. District information and broadcasting officer Rohini Ganesh Prasad Pandelu, president Udupi District Working Journalists Association Michel, Divakar, Santhosh and other reporters were present.

    Journalists have a stronghold on almost every segment of the society, and Environment is one of the most important area of their involvement. The Journalists know the value of green surroundings and also clean surroundings everywhere, and they know to appreciate the facts more vividly than anyone else.

    Now that the monsoon season has already started in full swing, each and everyone in the community have a role to plant new plants anywhere and everywhere so that fruit plants, flower plants and any other kind of vegetation is encouraged every corner of the empty land.

    Let there be more fruits, vegetables and flowers wherever possible. That will also remind everyone to conserve the usage of water so that every drop of water is diverted to our greenery so that our plants will survive and grow with more fruits and more flowers.
