Mangaluru, Jun 19: Tourists and locals who were at the Panambur beach on the evening of Monday, June 18 faced anxious moments as heavy winds like a tornado hit the beach. Personnel of the beach protection force blew the siren and issued warning to the people to go away from the seashore.

The tornado, which was noticed at around 6.30 pm in the sea travelled across the NMPT yard and moved towards the national highway. In the meantime, Suratkal, Panambur, Krishnapura and adjoining areas received rain with gusty winds.

As per the information given by Yathish Baikampady, CEO of the Panambur beach this tornado must have initiated in the deep sea and moved towards the beach. No damage to the shops and property at the beach is reported.

It is not unusual for strong winds to blow across the sea during the monsoon season. However, the velocity of the tornado wind took many by surprise on Monday evening at the beach. Locals said that the tornado lost its velocity within no time.

People who were present at the beach captured this rare vision of tornado on their mobiles, and the video soon went viral.

This is not an 'Tornado' but 'Water sprout'.
Water spouts are unique structures formed over the sea or ocean surface. Reason for these water spouts at sea is believed to a be vertical wind sheer- a wind force that changes direction as it goes higher. This leads to formation of a vertical funnel which we call a water spout.
For a very long time, scientists were of the opinion that the revolving mass of water in a water spout was in fact water of the sea. However, studies have revealed that what appears to be sea water floating up in air menacingly is actually spray of cloud water. The clouds gather and condensation of water leads to formation of a twirling mass of water droplets.
Even though a water spout on sea is generally considered non destructive, it has an immense potential of being destructive. Like a tornado, the most destructive aspect of a water spout is its ability to carry anything that comes in its way with it.
Sand particles, small floating structures, humans, animals and sometimes even small boats maybe carried along with a water spout.
This is phenomenon is very common in coast of Florida, Gulf of Oman and Singapore.

Nothing can be done as its natural phenomenon!. Only thing that can be done is stay away when you see a tornado as the velocity of swirling winds sometimes cross 200 km/hr in that small area of influence and survival is very difficult of get caught!
