Mangaluru: Accident at Bondel brings focus back on need for action on 'death-trap' road

Mangaluru, Jun 19: A shocking video of a two-wheeler rider miraculously escaping with a minor injury after ramming into a car on the airport road near Bondel has once a again highlighted the risk of travelling down this stretch that has been witnessing frequent accidents.

The video, which has gone viral, is from CCTV footage from a nearby establishment. A car is seen taking a U-turn, and a scooter approaching at a high speed rams into the car. The rider gets thrown over the car, before landing on the road. Locals and passers-by are seen rushing to his help and making arrangements to shift him to hospital. The rider luckily escaped with a minor injury.

Following the accident, residents of the area have yet again blamed the traffic police department for not taking adequate action against carelessness and irresponsibility, apart from reckless driving, that cause the frequent accidents. They have further demanded barricades to be installed on Bondel-Padavinangady stretch. If the police do not adhere to their requests, locals have decided to protest by blocking the road.

In January last year, Bondel and Kavoor residents had staged a protest against the administration after the death of NRI Ronald Noronha on the Mary Hill-Kavoor stretch. In October 2017, a rider was seriously injured when an unidentified vehicle rammed into his scooter and sped away. These are only two of the several accidents that have taken place in the vicinity.

Speaking to daijiworld, Dinakar, a resident of Pachanady said, "This is 7th accident in the last one month at the same spot. In between Padavinangady and Bondel junction, accidents are a daily story because of speeding and unexpected cross roads. Vehicles heading towards the airport and the city especially VIPs and from states like Kerala, are always moving at high speeds, thus putting themselves and others in danger. Two-wheeler riders use this road for stunts as there no barricades or speed-breakers on this road. There are educational institutions on either sides of the road from KPT to Bondel junction. But we hardly see any traffic wardens or the presence of police. People struggle to cross the road because of speed and frequency of approaching vehicles.”

A teacher from St Lawrence School, Bondel said, "We are scared to see the fast approaching vehicles on this road. Crossing the road for children is like an adventure fraught with danger here. Many times security guards and locals help children cross the road. Vehicles do not care about pedestrians. In a day, at least three to four times, we hear the screeching sound of sudden brakes. Barricades are the only solution to control the speed of vehicles on this road."

Manu, an employee of a private firm at Padavinangady says, "I ride my two-wheeler three to four times in front of Bondel church. I see school children every morning and evening struggling to cross the road. The vehicles, especially heading towards the airport pass at high speeds as there is a steep slope in front of the church. God only should save small kids and pedestrians in this area.

"We have repeatedly requested the departments concerned to take action. We were told that as the road is 'VIP road' which is used by politicians, barricades cannot be installed. We cannot understand the logic behind this reply. Are VIPs more important than lives of common people?" he questioned.

Manjunath Shetty, ACP, traffic department said, "We know the issues on this road and we are ready to install speed-breakers here. A stock of plastic humps is lying in our department office. Months ago, we started fixing them to the roads, but unexpectedly, someone complained to Lokayukta that it was unscientific. Then Lokayukta filed a suo moto case and inquiry is in progress. So it is difficult for us to fix humps on the roads. Meanwhile, we are doing all arrangements for the safety of pedestrians. In the case of airport road, especially in front Bondel church, we will take action at the earliest."

Guys , according to me , it is each one's responsibility to take care of themselves and their loved ones ( pillion riders or passengers in cars) . Mrs Eulalia in her comment has rightly pointed out that fact.

Who is right or who is wrong is just post mortem analysis from a legal standpoint.

I need my life , my legs , my hands , my loved ones - this should be the primary objective. Then, i can assure you , the accident rate will come down if not completely zero.

Two wheeler s drive very rashly in mangalore . They dont even bother to wait if the car is taking turn. Once the vehicle is hit car driver is blamed . Barricades should be installed but as I read the time till one protests and block the roads barricades wont come..... Is VIP that important?????

There are no such rules that barricade cant be imposed ... Citizens need to come out and fight this collectively...

Setting your car's rear-view mirror properly is of utmost importance in these situations. I used to set the rear-view mirror as everyone used to do, but there used to be some blind spots. I had chanced upon a video on youtube on correctly setting the rear-view mirrors, which has helped me immensely. Now after following the video, these blind spots are eliminated. Please have a look at the video (2-minute duration) and try changing the mirror setting, I am sure it will help a lot. Thanks

It is so easy to blame Police for every single thing. Why can't two wheeler riders learn their lessons from so many road accidents that happen. Almost all two wheeler riders ride recklessly, adding to misery is few of them with mobiles inserted in the helmet n talking. You watch this video, it is so clear how fast that scooter guy has come n hit the car. The car driver was so careful n slow in taking that u-turn. !!
In all, what we all must agree is that when we drive we need to go faster, we need to over take vehicle in front of us. So we are even willing to drive from left side of the road, middle of the road. So in all, it is the fault of almost all drivers for not being careful. Blaming car / blaming bike drivers is but natural. Each one of us on the roads need to be more cautious and careful, to ensure roads are safe for all of us.
Police are there only to assist us. Why blame them? what can they do too? They can not be every where, it is citizens responsibility to ensure their own safety.
Yes roads lack foot path. But that is a different department all together. City Corporation and civil authorities need to be taken to task for lack of proper foot paths. And where there are foot paths, there are roadside vendors occupying them for business. So who is responsible for these ?

awsm- kndpr : You are right . But if these cars remain on extreme right side track, to take a U-turn, then they can not turn in one go. So they have to negotiate the distance for a U-turn. !! What is the damn hurry for any one ? it will just take a minute or so for a U-turn?

i think you have viewed the video properly. this road has 2 track on each side. so from left track he can make U TURN easily. Small cars can easily make u turn in 2 track roads. and look the car he has no given indicator light too.

Nothing will help unless 2 wheeler's realize that they are on 2 wheeler. Really. the way they drive ..it's so reckless and nobody can help them stopping coming under other vehicle's under. I am driving very often on this road. so rash and reckless driving by these 2 wheelers... OMG. So, no rules, authorities, police... none can save them.... except the other vehicle driver who has the choice like let them come directly below your tyres or you escape them from dying... that's it. video also evidence that.

2 wheeler riders why don't you still educate yourself. In two wheeler going a 8th high speed is just like welcoming such incidents by ourselves. Before everything gets over for you at least you should learn the lesson and love your precious life. There are people who wants see you till they are alive. Just think about them. Before riding two wheelers at high speed

Death traps are increasing in the city. Nantur, pumpwell, kpt, bondel and the list goes on. Silence is not the solution to the problem unless some measures are taken. Highly educated city is not having safe roads.

And our license will be accepted internationally.

Two wheelers are a th great in mlore..specially KTM bikes.
Next the taxis specially OLA & UBER....reckless drivers.
City buses a another nuesense where they stop in middle of road ...( even complain traffic police no use as hafta is been paid by bus owners)
Need to couple of speed breakers the full stretch (which our department will not ..they will AAI to spend as the road goes towards airport
So bottom line nothing will happen ....only more accidents & more deaths...God forbidden it doesn't happen.
Polices keep barricades without reflectors ...someone in t he night goes & bangs it.
So best it apund such speed breakers where you really have break & cut down speed.
Aha.. that also will not happen bcse our no stars have to speed up.last minute to Airport....

Why blame police when people drive recklessly. A few month back I was travelling from Airport to Mangalore by a Airport hired taxi. The taxi driver was in so much hurry that he even wanted to overtake on the narrow Gurupur bridge even when a vehicle was coming from opposite side. For the next 10 kms he was driving recklessly and I was wondering whether I will reach home in single piece. The driving speed was not more than 60km .Still he was overtaking , honking and going ahead. I have driven vehicles even at more than 100km speed ,but never felt such a worry in me. Unless people drive such incidents will happen. See how the driver had taken the turn from extreme left to right or for that matter the scooter driver who is racing. Whom you will find fault with. How the police can help this situation. Only solution to have pits on the roads as we had before !

First, the car driver must be put behind bars. This is more important than placing barricades or speed breakers. I've driven on this road on countless occasions and the only death traps I found were errant drivers. Once such drivers disappear, the roads will start looking safe.
Seeing the video, it's just God's blessings that saved the bike rider!

There is sufficient space on either side of the padavngady road to bondel to construct a footpath for two people to walk. High speed cars, buses and bikes move on this road.People especially old and sick are afraid to walk on this road due to the speeding vehicles. Moreover Small children cross the road from school near bondel church to catch the bus on other side of the road.speed limit boards s should be placed on this road and the drivers should be fined for exceeding the limits.Hope the concerned authorities do the needful to avoid any further mishaps and loss of innocent lives.
