Mangalore, Sep 25: The Zilla Panchayat (ZP) general body meeting held here on Wednesday September 24, witnessed heated discussions over the attacks on churches in the district. The ZP passed a resolution condemning the attacks.

The meeting also condemned police atrocity on Victoria D’Cunha, a ZP member from Bajpe. There were some ruffled feathers after Tungappa Bangera, a BJP member, questioned Congress members about why D’Cunha was outside after section 144 was clamped in the taluk.

At this, members of both parties started to shout slogans at each other.Meanwhile, BJP members accused the Congress of supporting religious conversion. The arguments almost reached the point of boycotting the meeting.

Some ZP members, led by MLA Abhayachandra Jain, left their seats in the meeting hall. MLA UT Khader convinced them to return to the meeting hall. The meeting passed a resolution stating that a delegation from the ZP would meet the rural development minister on allotments.

The meeting was held under the presidentship of K Sucharitha Shetty. A M Kunjappa, chief executive officer, ZP, and vice-president Jayashree Kodandoor, were also present.
