Belagavi: Five killed in accident near Nippani

Belagavi, Jun 26: Five persons died on the spot and another suffered serious injuries in an accident which happened at the outskirts of Nippani town in the district on Monday June 25. The accident happened when a Bolero pick-up vehicle and an Eicher truck collided with each other.

Four persons from Kolhapur and Nippani areas who were in the Bolero vehicle and the driver of the vehicle who was from Hirekerur in Haveri district, lost their lives. Another person from Hirekerur who was in the vehicle suffered serious injuries. He is being treated at a hospital in Kolhapur.

The Bolero vehicle was moving towards Kolhapur with a load of vegetables from Ghataprabha when tragedy struck. Its tyre burnt in front of the government Gandhi hospital at Nippani. The vehicle went out of the driver's control, hit the road divider and smashed into the Eicher truck that was moving on the other half of the road. The Eicher truck too went out of control and hit the government bus that was moving towards Hospet from Nippani. As the bus driver immediately controlled the vehicle and moved it aside, a bigger tragedy was averted.

The Eicher truck loaded with chemicals was moving towards Bengaluru from Satara. The four persons in the Bolero were vegetable merchants who used to transport vegetables from Ghataprabha everyday to sell at Kolhapur.

Due the intensity of the accident, both the vehicles were badly mangled. The police had to use cranes to separate the vehicles and bring out the bodies.
