Udupi: Hapless family of aged people struggling to stay afloat

Udupi, Jul 1: To live happily in the present day society, one needs to be financially stable. There is a family at Kodankoor within the municipal limits here which is left with only three members now, but all of them are aged and do not have an assured source of income.

The family we are referring to belongs to Indira (70), and her two brothers, who have been living at their current location for over five decades. In the past, the family saw good days. Indira recollects that her mother had seven children. Out of her siblings, two brothers live with Indira now. One of them works as painter, but during the rainy season, he goes jobless. Her other brother, Vittal, used to roll bidis for a living, but for the last some years, he has been bedridden on account of sickness. As such, currently Indira is the only one who has to earn for the family and shoulder all the responsibilities of the family.

It is tragic that this family's plight has not been noticed by others in the society. On the face of it, the house does not present a gloomy picture, as everything looks alright. But a person who enters the house can see cobwebs, which seem to have accumulated over the last several years, hanging from all corners of the house, broken roof tiles, roof beams which have become too weak to handle the weight of the roof, and water which freely enters the house during rainy season. Locals are surprised that this house has withstood the rain fury witnessed over the last many days. To shield the house from getting battered by rain, it was recently partly covered with tarpaulin. Walls on one section of the house are built of mud, and they might crumble anytime now. The toilet of the house crashed to the ground due to heavy rain recently, and the family has no resources to build it again.

The family possesses a ration card but it has not been the beneficiary of the government's scheme of providing free LPG connection. Indira currently earns something by rolling bidis. None of these three old persons get old age pension. Indira has no eyesight in one of her eyes. Indira, who has taken over the work of bidi rolling from her elder brother, has been able to earn only Rs 300 per week.

Indira reveals that her elder sister's son whom she raised like her own son met untimely death. His wife earns something but she is unable to help Indira. Indira therefore is confounded about her future. This old lady of Kodankoor is in need of assistance immediately. Although a local organization has evinced interest to help her, it finds it hard to pool enough money for the renovation of the house. At the same time, the family does have any alternative accommodation to stay put during the rainy season.

If some largehearted samaritans come forward to help this family at its time of crisis, it would be possible to repair their home. Many drops together form an ocean. Therefore, Daijiworld requests donors to come forward generously to help this lady who has become helpless and directionless to the extent possible.

For extending assistance, Sandeep Kotian, Kodankoor may be contacted on 9980027199.

Indira's bank account details:

Account No: 154501231000053
Account holder's name : Indira
Bank Name : Vijaya Bank, Bananje branch
IFSC Code : VIJB0001545

Sorry to read it, I hope all of us can donate to help the aged family.

I guess we all should take it as a lesson and save money to secure ourselves in the future. The government takes tax when we are fit and never returns benefits during old age. Sad state of affairs.

President Kovind was forecasting 5 trillion dollars GDP for India by 2025. What is the use? Some people's dog house or cow shed may look much better than this house. Government should reach out to these people instead of waiting for people to come forward for government assistance. Where are the social workers? Elected politicians should visit them at once and make sure they will not die by starvation until the next election. There are 3 votes are at stake ! Let the voters know what you have done for these poor people.

    Mr. NN, NN,

Some people will not change, People of our country are as much corrupt as Politicians or Government workers. I know some people in our community in Udupi Taluk, Who had real property and part of it sold and part of it transferred to relatives, Some of the relatives and community members from western Countries have built and given them brand new homes. And send them and give them more than enough money. Have cores of rupees in different Banks and cooperative Banks and collect disability & old age pension from Government, Collect subsidized rice and other Government benefits, have free Konkani and other Free medical cards. Still act and live like poor persons. It is how one manage his/her life and not the resources. Money can not change some of the people. People have to change the mindset. No mater what some people will live like animals and keep the property dirty and it is imposible to change them.

The pathetic situation of the family proves that the local administration is failed in Udupi area. State government schemes not reaching the poor, all the pro poor schemes are swallowed by the corrupts. Now anybody can realise why Congress lost the election so badly because it's pro poor schemes didn't reach the designated people. This is the example.

This hapless family's reps : MLA, MP, MLC get pensions even if they serve a part of their term. But these people? Lamentable . People show yur true religion : help the needy, love and peace. Recently there was a case of strong protest against the help extended by Muslims in burying an elderly Hindu women. That is the sad state of affairs in India today. Time to join than divide. God bless Sandeep Kotian, Kodankoo.

My question is "where does all the Bhagya's & government schemes going"? Government announces schemes but it doesn't reach to the needy. In this country rich will become richest & poor will become poorest. You can find rich will be having BPL ration cards, getting old age pension etc.. etc.. But the poor don't have anything.....
