Mangaluru: Shiradi ghat stretch of highway to open by Jul 15

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 3: Because of heavy rainfall, second phase road development work of Shiradi ghat stretch of national highway 75 was delayed by about two weeks. As such, concrete mix has just been laid for the last leg of this road planned to be improved. As it takes 15 days’ time for curing the concrete, in all probability, this road will reopen for traffic from July 15 or thereabout.

The work of laying concrete road for a distance of 12.38 km between Addahole and Kempuhole for a width of 8.5 metres was completed a few days back, but work on road stretches on either side of the three bridges on the ghat section was pending. Concreting this stretch of the road was completed on Saturday night.

About 80 percent of construction of protective wall is still pending here. This work might take a couple of months as such walls have to be built at steep roads and narrow, steep edges of rivulets in some stretches.

The work of developing this 13 km road was executed with the help of a modern machinery imported from Germany. 77 culverts were improved and expansion of three bridges has been undertaken. The first phase of road between Heggadde and Kempuhole had been executed by Ocean Construction in record time. As the contractor to whom second phase road work was given did not execute the work, this stretch also had been given to Ocean Construction, which has been appreciated for maintaining good quality in the first phase road work. The second phase has also been completed in a record time of 5.5 months although the firm was given time till April 2019 to complete the work as per terms of contract.

Director of the company, Sharfuddin, said that vehicles can move on the road once road work is completed. At the same time, protective wall work will continue.

National Highways Authority of India superintending engineer Raghavan said that curing of this road will take about 15 days’ time, and that PWD and district administration will take a call on allowing vehicles to move on the road.

Mr. Sense Shetty, U need to ask this question High way authorities of India controlled by Nitin Gadkari! I am waiting since 15 days to drive down on this ghat road to Mangalore.
During 2016 I left Melbourne in Australia in April. When I went back in November to Melbourne again a 25 km new road was built with complete street lights etc. & our national highway authorities could not complete 13 km road within 6 months time. Really it is a very sad situation!

This is the fourth time the date is being given for restarting the road. This time too it is doubtful.
What is Kateel saying now. He was confident of 5th July when the date was changed 3rd time.

In fact, I had planned to drive from Mangalore to Bangalore on 11th using shiradi ghat based on Kateel's promise, keeping a safety margin of 6 more days. Thank God, I changed my mind.

Dear AnilKumar, Mr. Kateel isn’t almighty to predict the actual time of opening the road. He can say but we never know what nature has to do with it. It’s obvious that the workers have to halt during rains or the quality of the work will be degraded over time. Unfortunately we only then blame the same people even though if it’s not their mistake . (I’m not a fan of Kateel though)

I am not a technical guy, buy outside India they do not use Portland cement but some other type of cement which does not require water curing. Cant we use that cement in India, or does our weather have something to do with this? Can someone with knowledge on this enlighten?

Satya mangalore certainly it has to do with weather .Whereas here in Germany in summer sometimes Teer on road will be so hot and concret ed road will blowup and burst on high ways. Then cant drive .It has to be repaired in winter.More I cant tell.It is like we use for winter winter tyres and for summer summer tyres.I see on this Shiradi Gaht only at present some jally is on but no proper damar is not there.still they want to give free before work is done?Better postpone a few days but complete the road in a better condition.Otherwise always this repair and repairing all the time ,driving is not possible .even the sides should be completed.Do the work precise and complete.

    Satya,
No such things like weather cement concrete jally etc.
Our corruption system is used here for constructing roads where as in other countries proper quality control is used. Only difference here in India is corruption is main culprit for doing quality business.
visit some Asian and Arab countries you will see the difference.
Our quality is nadapudu/chalta hai which is dangerous for development. No perfection in any work.
