Mangaluru, Jul 18: Monsoon winds have picked up momentum with effect from Tuesday July 17 evening. The meteorological department at Bengaluru has predicted heavy rainfall in the coast till July 21. It said that every day, rainfall amounting to about 115 mm might be experienced in the region during this period.
On Tuesday, the coastal areas got less rainfall till afternoon. Except for drizzle in the morning and some rain in the afternoon, there was sunshine. However, by Tuesday evening, heavy rain accompanied by strong wind began to pound different areas in the coastline.
Large tracts of agricultural fields have been inundated due to heavy rains in various places including Pavoor and Harekala in Konaje near here. Because of heavy rain, the farmers are losing hope of raising good crop. As farmers are unable to remove mud accumulated on the sides of their fields to allow water to flow away, many fields are continuously under water now. Farmer leaders have blamed people's representatives and officials of failing to do anything to address this situation.
During the 24-hour period till Tuesday morning, Beltangady received highest rainfall of 72.9 mm. Mangaluru city got only 21.5 mm rainfall. Total rainfall in July this year has been less as compared to last year.
Sea erosion at Ullal continued to be worse on Tuesday. Ullal city municipality has served warning notices families which continue to live in houses that are facing danger from the surging waves.
Rivers including Kumaradhara and Netravati have been flowing much above their normal levels. Bathing bay at Subramanya continues to be inundated since the last eight days while the old Kumaradhara bridge is under water.
