Mangaluru Jul 21: Renowned consultant, Pediatrician and neonatologist Dr Nischal Rao spoke on the topic of 'Crisis Resource Management' at KMC hospital in the city on Friday, July 20. Nischal Rao is an expert in neurodevelopment and resuscitation, Whittington Hospital and clinical lecturer, university college hospital, London.
"Whenever you start off your work remember to have a checklist to avoid human errors. Human errors also happen with health care setup and we need to understand the human factor. To reduce the human errors, you need to run simulation exercise every day,” Dr Nischal Rao said.
"Designate leadership. In a crunch situation, a true leader will step back and ask who can handle the situation. It is called a dynamic leadership. In some scenarios, even nurse can be a leader. It is not necessary that every time a senior most person has to be the leader in a crunch situation,” he added.
"Anticipate things on what can be done in a crucial situation. If you feel heavy bleeding will occur during a surgery, arrange for the blood in advance. Know the environment very well before starting your work. In some situation, I have felt that I have lost control. But we don't express it loudly. We need to mobilize the resource properly,” he advised.
"When the work begins, communicate properly and assign the duties to the concerned person. This will distribute and reduce your workload." he informed.
Prior to the programme, speaking to media, Dr Nischal Rao said, "I feel really proud to be an alumnus of KMC Manipal and am grateful to the government and their efforts to provide such a quality education in Manipal which made us grow,”
When asked about saving a child at Whittington hospital in London, Dr Nischal Rao said, "That child was not breathing. I was a neonatologist in the very same hospital. Everyone thought that the newborn baby was no more. I provided essential emergency treatment to the newborn and then the baby started to breathe and now is in a healthy condition,"
"We will give training to nurses at KMC in Mangaluru and Manipal to deal such situations and to be mentally prepared in emergency," he added.
Medical superintendent of KMC Mangaluru, Dr Anand Venugopal and head of the department of paediatrics, Dr Kamalakshi Bhat were present.
