Bengaluru, Jul 24: A retired police official here is said to have cheated about 30 police personnel to the tune of lacs of rupees in the name of running chit fund scheme. The name of the person has been given as P Ramakrishna, a retired policeman.

Ramakrishna was in the past, working as sentry in the office of the director general. He retired from service in the year 2012. Thereafter, he used to stay in a rented house on Sirsi Road here. He used to collect five to ten thousand rupees every month from police personnel whom he knew, in the name of running chit fund scheme. About 30 police personnel who gave money to him for realizing the dream of educating their children, conducting marriage or owning house, are now left high and dry.

Several police, who were cheated by Ramakrishna, had filed complaint in 2014 in Chamarajpet police station against him. When the police officers summoned and questioned him, he confessed to his mistake and issued signed cheques to everyone. All the cheques were returned unpaid by banks. Thereafter, cheque bounce cases were filed and he was served arrest warrant by the court. Ramakrishna is found to be repeatedly changing homes and has succeeded in not getting caught so far, sources say.

A person who said he too was cheated by Ramakrishna said that Ramakrishna used to operate chit fund scheme since the last 15 years and in the first few years, he was properly running the scheme. Thereafter he used to give one or the other reason for non-payment when the chit members approached him for money. He availed of voluntary retirement scheme of the department and raised heavy loans for his daughter's marriage after retiring.

It is also said that he used to raise loans from different people by claiming to own nine acres of land belonging to his family near Nidaghatta.

In Mumbai, I saw a govt officer giving Rs 500 tip in a hotel. A police havaldar in our housing society was recently arrested and suspended when he was caught red handed accepting Rs 5 lakh bribe. After a week, he was in uniform and when our housing society secretary asked, he said, he paid Rs 10 lakhs to higher authorities and he was declared innocent. I heard a police officer in a party saying that the salary he receives is just enough for his breakfast. For a police, Rs ten thousand is just peanuts, if he has learnt to swim with the tide in the dept.
