Bengaluru, Jul 28: The government has restrained private and deemed to be universities from collecting additional fee they used to charge students who get entry into engineering and architectural courses under government quota in the name of tuition fee.

For the year 2018-19, the government has fixed tuition fee of Rs 54,430 for private and deemed to be universities in the state. It has warned these colleges and universities to collect only the fee as prescribed by the government.

There are 15 private and deemed to be universities in the state. In all the universities, a specific number of seats are filled through government quota during the admission process. The government fills these vacancies on the basis of intake capacity through Karnataka Examination Authority. The officials of technical education department have already provided the seat matrix for the current year to the authority, it is gathered.

The normal practice so far was to form committees for private and deemed to be universities to fix tuition fee. Tuition fee is fixed on the basis of the recommendation of this committee. Although the government had framed clear guidelines about the fixation of the tuition fee, none of them were being followed properly.

For the year 2018-19, the state government has fixed tuition fee of Rs 54,430 for all the government quota seats in deemed and private universities. The government has said that if any of the colleges and universities violates the fee rules prescribed by the government including tuition fee, they risk losing recognition by the university apart from facing penalty of ten lac rupees.

The private and deemed to be universities have been asked to meticulously follow the guidelines and rules prescribed by All India Council for Technical Education as per which if students cut short their education for different reasons, the original documents and tuition fee collected from them should be returned forth.
