(From L to R): Basappa, Monisha, Manjula and Gowramma
Jodupala was covered with mist on the afternoon of Sunday and was receiving intermittent rain accompanied by winds. The hill near the hotel collapsed to a depth of 100 meter. It will take at least six months to clear the mound of mud.
Barricade was put up at three different places on Sampaje road and the movement of people was controlled. Even the residents, whose houses have been locked, were not allowed to go near them due to the safety issue.
Families of Keshav Gowda and Medappa were shifted from Ubrala Mavaji under Markanja village limits as there is a fear of landslide.
The tragic story of Basappa family
Monisha (23) and Mohit (23) are the twins of Basappa, group D employee at Sullia government hospital and Gowramma, who was working as an Asha activist. They had a modest house with cement sheet roof and little farmland. Now only Mohit is left in this family as Basappa and Monisha are already dead and search is on to find the dead body of this mother Gowramma and cousin Manjula, who used to reside with them.
"We are twins. My elder sister Monisha had called me on the morning of Thursday, August 16 and had enquired about my well being. She did not inform me anything about the incessant rain. I told her to be alert. She said "Okay. I do not have much charge left in my mobile and I will call you later." Now I got to see her lifeless body," said a wailing Mohit, who is the only one left alive because he was away at Tiptur where he is employed in Selco Company.
"I had visited home some time ago. I never imagined that such a tragedy will take place," said a teary-eyed Mohit.
Now Mohit is residing with his uncle in Sullia. He just cannot imagine going towards home. His relatives and friends are consoling him. The dead bodies of his father Basappa and sister Monisha were found and were cremated after the post-mortem on Sunday, August 19.
Monisha, sister of Mohit, had completed MCA from Mysuru. She had completed her apprenticeship in Bengaluru and returned home some time ago. However, fate has curtailed her dream of a good job. Her body was found in a canal, a little away from her home.
