Udupi: SHRC Seeks ATR About Church Attacks from Chief Secretary

Udupi, Oct 19: Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) member Parthasarathy informed here on Friday October 17, that the chief secretary (CS) has been asked to furnish the action taken report(ATR) on the attacks on prayer halls and churches in the districts.

The SHRC chairman and two members will make their observations based on the ATR, first informaion reports, CDs etc., that the CS  is expected to submit. They will also recommend suitable action, to the authorities concerned, he added.

Parthasarathy held a meeting with the staff of the office of the deputy commissioner here, including a session on how reports on human rights violation cases are to be compiled.

"The SHRC received 78 human rights violation cases since July 2006 from the district, out of which 24 have been disposed off. The 78 cases also contained 20 cases in which the commission had taken suo moto decisions, based on the findings of the media reports.  Most of the pending cases involve police, revenue, health, agriculture and horticulture departments, he explained.

In the state, media has played an important role in bringing out human rights violation cases. He said, that the authorities concerned wil be apprised of the two deaths occured due to the bad roads in the district, considering them as human rights violation. The national highway engineer and other senior officials will be brought to the spot for working out immediate solution to the problem, he informed.

The Commission wants to spread awareness anpit human rights act provisions through colleges, gram panchayats etc.,

    It is heartening that the at least some are trying to do something regarding blatant violation of human rights. I wish the SHRC well and pray that the process of giving justice and punishing the guilty may be completed fast. After all we need a just and peaceful society.
