Udupi, Sep 4: "All the allegations made by Mubarak against me are false,” said Ansar Ahmed, president of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Karave) here on Tuesday September 4.

Addressing a press meet, Ansar said, "Mubarak made a false claim that I have demanded Rs 1.5 lacs to release Shankar Poojary who is arrested in Kuwait. But these are false allegations. Truth is Mubarak is not co-operating in our efforts to bring back Shankar. Only once he had come to police station with Jyothi, wife of Shankar,"

"Let him show the evidence if at all I have demanded money. Ravindranath Shanbhog, human rights president informed us that central government cannot help in this case. He has asked us to get a lawyer in Kuwait to release Shankar. We have hopes of releasing Shankar in a month," he added.

He further said, "We do not need money. We need people to communicate with Kuwait authorities. When Tasleema had carried the same tablets, she was not arrested though it is banned in Kuwait. Why Shankar was arrested? Mubarak promised help in the media. He accepted that it was his mistake and Shankar was innocent. But now he is not co-operating,"

Jyothi, wife of Shankar said, "My husband reached Kuwait on June 13. Since then there is no information about him. Gopal, who is our neighbour had demanded Rs 25,000 promising that Shivanand Tallur, who is associated with NRI committee in Bengaluru, would help to release Shankar. Mubarak had promised to provide Rs 10,000 every month but till now nothing has been given,"

Ansar said that a meeting was held along with Udupi DC and efforts are being made to help Shankar. "We have also sought help from Billawa associations in Kuwait and we are hopeful of getting help," he added.

Earlier, Mubarak, son-in-law of Tasleema alleged that Rakshana Vedike president Ansar Ahmed assured that he will help to release Shankar and demanded Rs 1.5 lacs. He also said that he has a phone conversation recording of the same.

It may be recalled that Shankar Poojary, who was employed in Kuwait and was returning to work after visiting home, was caught by the authorities at the airport in Kuwait with a parcel of tablets containing banned medicines three months back. The parcel was supposed to be delivered to Tasleema in Kuwait. It was given by Mubarak.

I dont understand why would anyone give 210 tablets of banned Tramadol containing tablets.
A person can have maximum of 10 days use of the Tramadol tablets, after which a person gets addicted to the substance similar to banned drugs.
The person might need to go for drug rehabilitation centre if he has to be cured of withdrawal symptoms.
These tablets have serious side effects, including hallucination, for that reason they are banned.
I think the airlines must be notified in all airports in India, to ask the passenger if he/she has carried any item given by other persons at the check-in counter itself, and to inform the perils of carrying some one else's items.

Indian Embassy should appoint a lawyer to defend Shankar Poojary...Lawyer's in Kuwait are very expensive and mostly good for nothing...proceedings and Charge sheet will be in Arabic...so there is no way Shankar Poojary could defend himself...Whatever truth may be...

Sad story of Shankar. It is unfortunate. as the matter is under the Jurisdiction of Kuwait, their law will decide the punishment. A good lawyer in Kuwait might be helpful. Also appealing to Kuwait's ruler might help in lowering the jail time.

Not knowing a law and breaking (Unknowingly) it does not give you any concession or pardon. Hence it is important to know the laws/rules of countries one visits/lives.

If the said incident had happened in Singapore, the punishment would have been worst. Singapore has highest punishment of death sentence for drug related crimes.

There is no point in blaming Mubarak, Tasleema or Shankar. Can not reverse the past.
We can prevent similar incidents in the future.
    Few thoughts.
    1. If you are carrying any parcel/medicines please check if this product is banned or offence. If at all you are carrying a parcel, get it at least previous day, open it and repack. Avoid accepting the package at the last minute in airport or from any strangers(even if they pay you. Do not leave your bags unattended. There are incidents reported where someone might drop somethings in your bags when you go to the toilet and send messages to their associates to collect at the time of arrival. here you are carrying a banned substance without even knowing about it.
    2. Doctors should not prescribe Controlled medicines in the absence of the patient. Tasleema was in Kuwait and the doctor prescribed the medicine in her absence. Indian Medical association branches can educate the doctors.
    3. Pharmacies should not dispense controlled substances to family members, only with a valid ID to the patient. Pharmacy should have refused to give Ultracet to Mubarak and Tasleema should have bought the medicine in Kuwait through a doctor or self carried with her during her next visit to India.

It is legal to carry medicines for self use, provided one has the proof of purchase, copy of prescription which clearly states the name, date of birth.

I feel sorry for the innocent man that carried the tablets.

According to Mubarak, a quantity of 210 tablets was handed over by him to Shankar. With this quantity, forget about any NRI, even a lawyer in Kuwait will not be able to do anything. Hopefully the judge will be convinced by Shankar.

The whole episode is really unfortunate. I only hope that more people do not become victims like Shankar.

Why her son-in-law not given a doctor's letter or pharmacy bill alongwith medicene. Something somewhere is hiding. Did they not informed doctor medicene should carry out of country.
