Shivamogga, Sep 13: A student who was pursuing B Tech degree course in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Guwahati committed suicide on Wednesday September 12. She has been identified as Nagashree Aithal, daughter of Chandrashekhara Aithal from Sooreghatta near Mattimane, Hosanagara taluk. She had left to study in IIT Guwahati during the fag end of July this year.
Nagashree had absented from classes on Wednesday morning by telling her classmates that she was not feeling well. She hanged herself from the ceiling fan in her hostel room, when her room mate was away in class. It is said that in a suicide note she left behind, she explained that her goal was to become a teacher, and pursuing engineering degree was not her dream. "I have come to the conclusion that instead of disappointing the parents and family members, it would be better for me to end my life," she reportedly said in the letter.
Her relatives however claimed that Nagashree, eldest of two daughters of her parents, could have bagged seat in any prestigious college in Bengaluru but joining IIT was her choice.
After getting information from the IIT authorities, Nagashree's parents began their journey to Guwahati on Wednesday afternoon.
A large number of people were shocked at this development. Nagashree had completed her primary education in Navodaya school and pursued PU education at Bengaluru. She was a brilliant student since young and had excelled in all activities. People in her neighbourhood said that she was capable and bold and hence it is difficult to believe that she ended her life.
When Nagashree's room mate came back from the college, she repeatedly rang the door bell but Nagashree failed to open the door. Security was called then. The personnel who peeped through the window saw the girl hanging from the ceiling fan, it is learnt.
An IIT spokesperson said that Nagashree was only about one and half months into her course and she had attended student counselling, which is mandatory for every student. During the counselling, she did not exhibit any signs of depression, he added.
Additional superintendent of police of Kamrup, Sanjeeb Saikia, said that in the suicide note, the girl had written that she was depressed at having to study engineering instead of becoming a teacher, and that she felt like failing to realize the dreams of her parents.
