Ballari: Girl dies, several suffer injuries, after balcony crashes

Ballari, Sep 23: After the balcony of a building at Chittawadgi, Hospet, crashed due to the weight of the people standing on it, a girl died while 58 others suffered injuries, some of them of serious nature. The incident happened during the early hours of Friday September 21.

Usha (14) died on the spot while six others, whose nature of injuries was grave, were admitted into Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences, The others are being treated in the government hospitals in the town and Koppal.

At around 4.45 am, 'Peerala' procession of Sanna Ramali Swamy and Dodda Ramali Swamy was passing through car street, Chittawadgi. Over a hundred people were standing on the balcony of an old building located opposite Guru Kalmateshwara temple. The balcony fell down, crushing Usha, who was standing under it, under the weight of the debris and people. 58 others were injured, six of them seriously, a local who was an eye witness, stated.

Health minister, Shivananda S Patil, who was moving to Vijayapura by that area, visited the government hospital after coming to know of the tragedy. He announced Rs 50,000 compensation personally to the kin of the deceased girl.
