Heart screening of Udupi district police personnel done at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal

Manipal, Sep 28: As a part of the ‘World Heart Day’, department of Cardiology, Kasturba Medical College and Hospital Manipal in association with department of CVT, SOAHS, MAHE Manipal conducted a free heart health check-up programme for all the staff members of the Udupi district Police Force. About 500 police personnel participated. The free heart health checkup programme included free ECG, Echocardiogram and expert consultation.

Inaugurating the event, Laxman Nimbargi, district superintendent of police said, “Police Department had become better in recent years and is more transparent and accountable. There are 900 police staff for service of entire Udupi district which has a population of about 13.00 lakhs. Police force offers service 24x 7 without a break. Further, the service of policemen ranges from petty domestic arguments to neighbourhood quarrels and so on, making it highly stressful." He also suggested that yearly medical and heart check-up were essential for police personnel.



Dr Poornima Baliga pro vice-chancellor MAHE, Manipal addressing the policemen said, “Healthy lifestyle and food in moderation and work with a smile on the face is the key for a good heart health for the police personnel." She said, “Hithavaki mithavaki aahara sevisbeku” meaning to say that good and tasty food is required to be taken in moderation. Police personnel require tips on better management of stress or else it could lead to cardiac problems in later in their lives, she said.

Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent Kasturba Hospital Manipal said, "Just appearing once for a medical screening test is not sufficient but it has to be done periodically and those who require follow-up should do it with suggested preventive measures and medication." He said that Kasturba Hospital would offer free screening for policemen again next year.
