Mangaluru, Nov 28: Opposition BJP corporators took strong exception to what they termed as illegal continuance of tender process and misinformation provided to corporators by city corporation officials, at the general session of the city municipal corporation held here on Tuesday November 27.

The opposition corporators pointed out that in the previous session of the council, it was decided to appoint seven additional advocates to handle cases pertaining to the city corporation as 358 court cases were pending. BJP corporator, Vijayakumar Shetty, said that the officials had furnished false information to the session and that the pending cases are less than hundred. He argued that the advocate of the corporation, Dr B G Prabhu, who has been efficiently handling the cases, has been insulted by adding new advocates.

The opposition insisted not to confirm the resolution passed by the previous session on this issue. As ruling party corporators opposed it, it was adopted, duly recording the objection of the opposition.

Opposition corporators also accused the corporation officials of violating rules relating to tender on appointment of legal officer. They said that a decision to continue the same official for three years was taken after two days since the tender period ended. They also wanted to know why the services were extended for three years, also the commissioner had permitted to extend the same for a year.

BJP corporator, Vijayakumar Shetty, argued that it is expected of commercial building owners to provide for vehicle parking. He said that malls in the city have been illegally collecting parking fee from the visitors. Another corporator, Sudhir Shetty said that because of this, people park vehicles by the roadside, affecting smooth traffic. Even ruling corporators joined hands with the opposition on this issue. City corporation commissioner, Muhammed Nazeer said that because of the absence of a separate building by law in the city, the corporation is finding it difficult to take action against the buildings. He said that legality of collecting the charges would be verified and if it is wrong, steps will be taken against the concerned.

City mayor, K Bhaskar, deputy mayor, Muhammed K and others were present.
