Boca midfielder Gago suffers new injury setback

Madrid, Dec 10 (IANS): Boca Juniors and Argentina international midfielder Fernando Gago will undergo tests this week to determine the severity of his latest injury, club officials said on Monday.

Gago limped off the pitch in the final minutes of Boca's 1-3 extra-time defeat to their Argentine rivals River Plate in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final on Sunday, a result that handed River a 5-3 win on aggregate, reports Xinhua news agency.

The Clarin newspaper reported that Gago told teammates he had "ruptured the tendon", having fallen awkwardly in the 116th minute at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Gago's career has been beset by a long list of serious soft-tissue leg injuries. The former Real Madrid player spent almost a full year on the sidelines in 2015 and 2016 after twice rupturing his left Achilles tendon.

The 32-year-old returned from more than seven months on the sidelines in May this year after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee.
