Mangalore: Reunion of Milagres Students after Two Decades

Mangalore: Reunion of Milagres Students after Two Decades

Mangalore, Jan 4: Some who had scored zero in mathematics became bankers; some who had been repeatedly corrected by the teachers have now been managing their own companies; for some, their teachers have become regular customers…all these incidents and experiences in addition to several others, were revealed after a gap of over 20 years.

As many as 35 school mates from out of a total of 72 belonging to the  1978-88 batch of Milagrese School turned up at the School Hall on Saturday January 3 to share their experiences and to relive  the memories of their school days under the theme 'Shine Bright… Be Light.. .’. The specialty of the reunion programme was the presence of their teachers who were  honoured on the occasion. Now, most of them are retired from their service.

Introducing themselves to strike a closer rapport, many said unequivocally that 'this is one of the great moments of our life, we never thought of reunion as a possibility’. Anil Francis, an engineer at the Oil Rig came all the way from Jordan to meet his old mates. While Shivananda Shetty, a business consultant and Praveen D'souza, manager of HSBC Bank did not find any reason to come from Mumbai. Praveen B Nayak, a KAS officer working in Puttur put aside all his meetings and assignments to be able to be here.

Recalling one of the golden moments in his  school days, Mithesh, who  owns an automobile shop in the city said he wrote 'My cat, my cat, my cat….' continuously for  10 lines in his answer sheet,  in reply  to a question that asked him to write ten lines on 'my cat or my dog'  because of utter confusion.

According to Dr Rakesh, surgeon at Yenepoya Hospital, it was Prasad Shetty, another class mate, who is running an advertising firm in Bangalore who took lot of pains in bringing the  old friends together under one roof after a long gap.

After all, from where this idea of reunion emerged? All the reunited school mates should be thankful to a community website Orkut.com. Edmond D'souza, an employee of Ford Company in UK pioneered this event but he was not able to be  present at the programme. He brought together his school mates in orkut account to keep himself updated. This helped in the reunion becoming  a reality. In a matter of two months the reunion programme had been arranged.

Former principal Fr Gregory W Vas, Fr Mendonca, principal Fr Lawrence D'souza, Vice-principal Herald Monteiro etc., also witnessed the reunion.

Vey happy to know about this function. Am 1985 (xth std)student. Remember some of the teachers like Holla (Kannada), Fr Vas (He is not only principal but a spiritual guide also), Juliat madam, and many other teachers- the building is so bright and situated at the heart of the city-
Even after decades, Fr Vas appears to be more energetic than before! We salute to Jesus Christ to give us such a great school.

My special 'PRANAM' my GURU'S namely Sri Laxman Shenoy Who taught us MATHS, Sri Rathnaker Rau who taught us Science, Sri Krishna Bhat who taught us Hindi, Fr Maxim Furtado who taught us Social Studies, Fr G.W. Vas (Principal)who taught us English, and for the Madam who taught us Biology when we were in SSLC.

Those days Milagres was one open place with tiled roof school building, Milagres Centre, open with casuarina at Falnir Road side, open at Milagres cross with a goodina-angadi across the road to buy chickies. Fr. C. Aranha, HM, who always had kittens & Miss Ditta with him for company? His Milagres Boarding was charging unbelievable Rs.90/Boy/Month (That includes room, food, medicine, play-materials & what not? Without fail, during study period, he will come with medicines like Iodex, Burnol, Safromycin etc. which we simply take & rub them under the desk. I recollect Miss Godavari, Ratnakar/Shenoy Sir, fat PT Sir, thin Drawing teacher, witty Hindi Sir, tall librarian, another tall lady Office clerk and a teacher who used to cross-tie her pleat of hair and the school-attainder who used to bang the hanging-rod for school bell. Once I was told to give a short bell but with over-excitement I gave long bell & the whole school rushed out to go home. We had short cut route from Coronet Laundry & Gadge-Patel office side-lane. Boarders flicking bonda & escaping for last show was another challenging adventure because the main door was kept locked from outside by Fr. "Bokro" (May his soul rest in peace) & two furious dog were guarding Milagres Flat. I recollect that broken School Hall cum NCC Room, Nambison Dairy in the new building & Hotel Rajkamal where we snack & drink milk.

It was a beautiful sight to see and reminiscent old teaching staff from Milagres High School. Fr Vas hasn't changed much except for more grey beard Fr. Vas memories are still fresh inside me, whole milagres building vibates as soon as Fr Vas came out of his chamber and his voice is heard even upto milagres canteen.

No doubt, it was Fr. Vas disciplinary style that brought about fame to school. After seeing the photographs and reading comments I felt as if I walked memory lane of good old school days. I am also sad to hear that our drawing sir and library master is no more may their soul rest in peace. Wishing success to all alumni all over world, keep the lantern of Milagres School burning wherever you are.

Wanted to know what about Shenoy sir and others. I know that Francis sir (hindi) was head master in Padav high scholl. I saw my class mate Krishan and Ronald in the picture. Also the primary PT sir in the picture. I still remember(VTH STANDARD) we used to play under arm cricket during PT hours once i asked that we will bowl over arm for which he replied to me do you think that you are international player to bowl over arm. So funny. Its great to see all the pictures. I wish all of them success and good health. Bye Ashith

father vaz can be described as excellence in his work, though his work was not accepted by his community due to politics, as a qualified CA and CWA, I can certify that he is the best in his field and such people come once in a lifetime. he was my ideal .

First Of all I would love to congratulate all those who made this possible. My most profound respect to my Headmaster and Principal, Fr Gregory W Vaz and my vice principal Fr. Valerian Mendonsa, off course not forgetting all my teachers from the primary ladies and gents and my fellow classmates juniors and seniors present during this grand event.

My brother Vivien Vaz and I are a product of this wonderful school and college later on when it evolved as one. I had planned something similar way back in 1997 but to only the grand assurance of classmates to meet up and form an association but to no avail leaving me just dejected. But off course there is no love lost. Fr Gregory Vas had even given us a reduction in the fees due to the financial constraints of our parents to which we shall always make us indebted. Off course there were ups and downs during the course of our studies and we had our fair share of fun too. Whenever I was on the wrongside of the records in the school, I always remember Fr Valerian Mendonsa, asking as to how much I had scored in the English language and I used to be always proud to mention 75 and above and that made always to excuse me.

I still remember the very sad parting we had with Fr Mendonsa who even shed a tear when he left us for a transfer to Milagres College, Kallianpur. I still have treasured the small card he gave us when he left us, with a picture of him at the back and some lovely wordings in the front. I shall always remain indebted to my Alma Mater for what I am today. I would sincerely appreciate if my dear classmates could reach me on vinvu3feo@gmail.com so when I would come down on vacation we could keep in touch.
