Mangalore: 'Karavali Ale' B V Seetharam Rejects Bail

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (TU/SP)

Udupi, Jan 6: Director and chairman of the Mangalore-based Chitra Publications Private Limited BV Seetaram was remanded to judicial custody till January 17 by the court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class here on Monday January 5. He was produced before the court handcuffed with tight security comprising of a gun man and four police officials.

He had been arrested from near Karkala on Sunday January 4 in connection with a defamation case. Judicial Magistrate First Class Sujatha ordered the extension of judicial custody till January 17 after Seetharam rejected bail, stating that he was apprehensive that the police would arrest him in connection with other cases which have been booked in some police stations. Therefore, he intended to remain in judicial custody for his personal safety, he said. Later he was hospitalized at Udupi district government hospital for treatment since he is a diabetic. It is learnt, that the policemen belonging to Bajpe police station had come here to arrest him in connection with a case pending there, in case he secured bail.

Speaking to media persons Seetaram's advocate Shashikanth Shetty said that the editor was directed to give a self-bond for granting of bail, but he refused to do so. He feels that his life is under threat in the hands of the police and the state government. 'Bringing the accused handcuffed to court was a violation of human rights. I have seen robbers and thieves being brought to court without handcuffs', he added.

Terming his arrest as an attack on freedom of the press, Seetaram said that the police insisted on handcuffing him. "This is a malicious campaign sponsored by the Baharatiya Janata Party government to muzzle the voice of the newspaper. My newspapers raised its voice against the MSEZ and attack on Christians in Mangalore and elsewhere. We had filed complaints against the attackers who ransacked my office and also the shops of the news agents in the city, but no action has been taken," he said. He also feared attacks by the Bajrang Dal activists in jail. Seetaram has been advised rest and treatment for three days by the doctor.

He said that the police had hatched a plan to execute him through a fake encounter in the deep forest near Karkala. "I am safe because of the mobile calls. I got information on encounter plans from the police sources themselves", he claimed.

It may be recalled, that 'Karavali Ale' newspaper office in Mangalore was attacked on November 17, 2008. Meanwhile, miscreants have been attacking news agents, hawkers and delivery vans of this newspaper for the last one and half months to disturb its distribution network.

Please note that the arrest warrant is issued by the honourable court. Police have just carried out the court orders. There is no necessity to bring in names of ministers here. Also check the track record of this "Journalist" , before passing comments on "freedom of the press"(like previous arrests, cases, defaulter status in press council etc)

What a shame to our democracy, we have a freedom to write in newspapers about the actual happenings, which no one has the right to stop it, but who are these bajarangdal or hindu fanatics to destroy our freedom. I am told that Karavli Ale newspapers burned in bundels by these miscreants and also the newspaper vans stopped by these people.Whenever i go to my vacation to M'lore I always used to read this newspaper, but today you will not get a single copy in Hamankatta, Kankanaday or in Mangaladevi area. Newspaper vendors are scared to sell this paper, but our Mangalore corporation ruled by BJP and state govt ruled by BJP do not take any step to stop these type of act. We can not blame police dept because they are puppet and they will be transferred within no time. Mr. B.V.Seethram should be released without any charges

I have read karavali-ale many times. Few times i felt their news are inaccurate and malicious. At the same time i appreciate some of their bold publications. It is really sad to see police dancing to the tune of politicians. If the editor is guilty he shoudd be punished. But by outlook it seems someone trying to take revenge on the editor. It is bad for democracy.

What a shame ? Mangalore the land of intellectuals is a silent witness to the police brutalities. Even a alleged are to be treated fairly till they are proved guilty. I am rather shocked at the silence of the Elders, Intellectuals, and other seniors in the city. Its high time sensible people come together and raise their voice against such devilish acts. Lawyers and the media need to be more vocal.

This is the height of Goondaraj mixed with terrorism and Taliban, all in one. What else we can say?? My concern is how to tolerate this for next 5 years? Such a long punishment for a single mistake of electing BJP with majority?? By then our Mangalore, so called "Parashurama Sristi" will become food for dogs!!!

Police are busy in political activities rather than doing their real job. In Jarigekatte practically everyday there are burglaries happening, but no govt official is bothered to do anything about that. Here there are dozones of police vans chase a news paper editor. What a shame.

Unbelievable things are happening under the rule of BJP government. I cant understand how dare the people elect this party. I have good friends in BJP too. One of them is Dr. V. S. Acharya, Hon. Home minister. If this BJP govt. can the eleven casses of criminals of the Safrons, what kind of Government we have in Karnataka. How can they rule us safely and how long this kind of government survive. I was in the morning at the Govt. Hospital Udupi I could see him but could not speak to him. Dr. Acharya, please release Mr. B.V. Seetharam immediately, otherwise the Govt. will face lot of problems. The Govt. is fully unjustified. If the governemnt is not justified, how the poor class, minorities like Christians, Muslims and daliths can survive. I may have to inform the foreign countries to risk us. Hope you will do the needful.

Yet another act of mockery over media..Police and the home ministry do not know what they are doing..Seetharam was handcuffed while arresting him. Here one should understand how Bajrang Dal chief Mahender Kumar was arrested and taken into judicial custody..Why was Mahender Kumar not handcuffed while arresting..And this is the difference. The former one is against the Govt and the latter is for the Govt. what a joke!!

Rejecting bail is one's personal Option. But before I appreciate the boldnes SriSeetaram in 'Karavali Alegalu', I want to be assured of thier genuineness. However treating an editor as an ordinary criminal is undersirable to say the least.

It's really disturbing to note that Freedom of Press is being muzzled in whats supposed to be a democratic state. Unscruplous elements who are at the helm of affairs are trying to rule with an iron hand. This right wing policies of the government does'nt and will not benefit the ordinary man in the long run.People must raise their voice agaist atrocities which are being committed ... lot of people in the state who have been in the bad books of the government have been implicated in false cases. Today when it's Seetharam turn all folks are quiet..tomorrow it could be you turn...who is going' to be there for you!?
