Mangalore, Jan 28: Director general of police R Srikumar said on Tuesday January 27 that media reports must be fair and accurate. They should not give any room to baseless reports, he said.

He was delivering a lecture on ‘Karnataka Security Scenario’ at a felicitation function organized by the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) held at Karnataka Bank Auditorium. Referring to the instance where Muhammad Abdul Sattar was acquitted from terror charges recently, he said that the media should have clear information on the event and their reports must be factual and fair.

Admitting that the police departments in India have third world resources, IGP Srikumar added that still society expects first world service from the police. “There is a gulf between expectation and delivery. We cannot meet the expectations of society until the departments are full-fledged and equipped with first world resources. We are spending only 90 paise per capita on internal security. Our department should have packages such as ‘Arogya Kavacha’, he opined.

Saying that every policeman is a citizen in uniform, he asked the public to inform the police of any criminal activities happening in their vicinity.

Srikumar said that the department is contemplating the introduction of an office of the commissioner of police in the city with an eye on the security situation in the region. The additional officials would look after the other parts of the district.

“We are also thinking of establishing more check posts and outposts along the coastal districts. I had asked the chief admiral of the navy to provide at least five personnel for security”, he said. In reply to a question during an interactive session he said that school managements should inform the police before conducting picnics. Two constables would accompany them, he informed.

IGP AM Prasad, and Srinivas S Kamath, president, KCCI, were present on the occasion.
