Bangalore: Sampangi Bribe Case Gets New Twist

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Jan 31: The court, which remanded the KGF MLA Y Sampangi to judicial custody till February 3, has asked the special public prosecutor to file objections if any to the bail application submitted by the legislator, before adjourning the hearing to Saturday January 31.

Additional city and sessions court judge R M Shettar, who took up the hearing of the case on Friday after issuing judicial custody orders on Thursday, had to postpone the hearing for some time, as the legislator was not produced when the hearing was taken up. In the afternoon, he heard the arguments and adjourned the hearing after asking the special public prosecutor to file his objections if any, for the bail application.

In the meanwhile, Karnataka Lokayukta additional director general of police R K Dutta said that Sampangi personally confessed to him that he had accepted Rs 50,000 in cash and Rs 4.50 lac through a cheque. He also revealed that the MLA explained to him that he had received the money to end a feud between Farooq and Nayaz, by paying the said money to Nayaz.

Dutta also added that the KGF police have been asked to provide protection to Farooq, who allegedly was receiving threatening calls after he approached the Lokayukta and got the MLA in question arrested.

New Twist

Nayaz in a statement said that the MLA had accepted the above money on his behalf that Sampangi had no selfish interests in accepting the said amount. By this statement, he has given a new twist to the Lokayukta case against the MLA.

"The MLA had intervened to settle a dispute between me and Farooq on the ownership of a site in Andersonpet. He had suggested to Farooq to pay a compensation of five lac rupees to me and on my behalf, he accepted the money. Sampangi has been made a scapegoat in the issue unnecessarily," he claimed.

He said that the house located behind the furniture shop he was running in Andersonpet, belonged to Farooq. Farooq started a dispute by claiming that the site, on which the furniture shop stood, belonged to him and also got help from the then superintendent of police (SP) H S Venkatesh to get him evicted. The SP forcibly evicted the furniture shop and took away furniture valued at about Rs 17 lac, besides filing fake case against me. To evade arrest, I had escaped and Farooq along with his supporters forcibly entered my home and posed threat to my wife and children. After knowing about the incident, the MLA intervened," he said.

"After arranging for the said compensation, the MLA had asked me to come to the Legislators Home to collect the money. As I away fearing arrest, I reached there with a delay of about two hours. Hence, the MLA received money on my behalf," he claimed.
