Mangalore: Attack on MLA's Daughter - Five Arrested, Students Protest

Mangalore, Feb 7: The police have arrested five people in connection with the harassment of the daughter of Kerala MLA Kunhambu.
The arrested are Raju alias Rajesh, Ranjith, Aravind, Sathish, all natives of Kasaragod district and Prakash of the city. Superintendent of police Sathish Kumar gave this information in a press meet called for the purpose on Saturday February 7.
“Rajesh is a time-keeper, Ranjith is a mechanic while Sathish is a bus conductor and Aravind is a driver. Prakash who is a friend of Rajesh is the mastermind behind the plan”, said Satheesh Kumar.
“The five are not members of any organization,” he said. The case is registered in Pandeshwar police station, as per the statement of Shruthi, the victim.
Mangalore: Students Protest Assault on MLA’s Daughter
Mangalore, Feb 7: Students of St Aloysius Pre-university College on Saturday February 7 staged a protest against the assault on Shruthi, a second year student, allegedly by a Hindutva vigilante group in the city.
Shruthi, the daughter of CPI (M) MLA from Manjeshwar CH Kunhanbu, and a Muslim boy were found conversing while traveling by bus. They were allegedly then abducted by Hindutva activists and harassed before being freed. The incident took place on the evening of Friday February 6.
Gathering on the college grounds, students condemned the assault and said that the brutal attack on an adolescent girl who was traveling in a public bus was inhuman, unconstitutional, and against the dignity of a human being.
Blaming the administration for the incident, demonstrators said that this is proof of unconstitutional administration. They requested the district administration to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and to take the culprits to task and enforce stringent measures against them.
The students also submitted a memorandum to President Prathiba Patil through deputy commissioner (DC) V Ponnuraj. The copies of the same have also been sent to the prime minister, governor, chief minister, mayor, commissioner, zilla panchayat chief executive, and superintendent of police.
Prof A M Narahari, Prof Ida D’Souza, Dr Ganesh Amin Sankamar, Fr Vincent Pinto, and Dr Leo D’Souza, also addressed the demonstrators.
