Air India Express COO Cap PP Singh Answers to the Open Letter

AIR INDIA Express COO Cap PP Singh Answers to the Open Letter

by Walter Nandalike

Feb 8, 2009

Dear Readers, Cap P. P. Singh, Chief Operating Officer has kindly replied to our open letter dated Jan 20, 2009 on which we addressing various issues faced by the passengers travelling from and to the gulf destinations.

Though his reply  does not fully satisfy us, we must appreciate his efforts to listen our problems and his assurances  to solve them.

The good news is that , with immediate effect the fares have been modified and the current fare structure  looks much more satisfactory when compared to the previous one.

There is at least about 15 -20% advantage on the revised fares ,specially during the peak season. Those who are booking tickets from Dubai to Mangalore for travel in June can avail the price range of AED 1500/- return including tax as against the earlier price of AED 2200/- of last December Season.

The disappointing news is that  there is no immediate plan to start the Mangalore - Saudi Arabia destination flights due to technical reasons.

Cap P P Singh has assured us that he will personally supervise the problems addressed by us. Let us hope that his promise will get the money’s worth for Mangalore-bound passengers.

We reproduce Capt PP Singh’s reply herewith.

Date: 06.02.2009

Dear Sir,

At the outset allow us to extend our sincere thanks to the Mangalorean Community for welcoming our airline with open arms and making our flights a huge success. In a short span two-and-a-half years the number of flights per week from Managlore to Gulf have increased from 3 to 18 . Thank you too for your interest and feedback as these serve as a constant guide to us and encourage us to improve our services and satisfy our loyal customers.

Our comments to the complaints are as under:

Our fares, like most other low cost airlines are dynamic, the general trend being that the fares are higher as the number of bookings increases and we move closer to departure date. Even for peak seasons of July, August, December etc, the fares begin at reasonable levels. It is only closer to departure and for the last few seats that the fares are raised to higher levels.

As these attractive fares are the introductory fares offered on first-come-first-serve basis, we urge you to book well in advance and be a little flexible with respect to the dates so as to get the best deal for your trip. It is only when the bookings are made at the last minute for a flight where only 5-10 seats are available, that the passenger ends up paying a premium amount. Our flights for July-August 2009 are already available for sale and you can see the changes in the fares,  and we encourage you to take advantage of low fares which are almost at the same level as Calicut.

I am sorry to learn that our ground staff and cabin crew are not behaving in a manner satisfactory to our esteemed customers. You can rest assured that I will personally look into this issue and corrective steps will be taken to ensure that the staff is well-trained, helpful and committed to make your journey more comfortable, both on ground and in the air.

Baggage allowance, unfortunately, has to stay limited because of engineering and operational reasons. The concept of low cost airline, coupled with payload restrictions of the aircraft does not permit us to allow more baggage or waive off excess baggage. This, I may say, is the policy with most airlines across the world û be it low cost carrier or legacy carrier.

Regarding the Ground Handling at Mangalore, we are informing our Manager to talk to the Handling Agent to ensure that satisfactory service is provided.  I am sure that you will see the change in the near future.

As you are aware that right from the beginning, we provide complimentary snack box to the passengers.  We do not think that it is a good idea to sell food on board.  This has been our Company policy.  At the request of some passengers, we have introduced hot meal on our flights from Mangalore.  I will talk with the Manager once again to talk to the caterers and if hot meal is not appreciated, than we will revert to snack box to be on both the sectors i.e to and from Mangalore.

AI Express is not considering operations to Saudi Arabia primarily because of the length of the flight as we have B737-800 aircraft  and payload penalty to operate on this long sector will result in flights being uneconomical.  However, the Community in Dammam is served on the flights from Bahrain.

Thanking you once again for having given valuable suggestions.

Cap P. P. Singh

Chief Operating Officer

Thank you Mr. Walter Nanandalike. Well done! I still feel you have to insist upon two important issues a)Space at arrival area - It is really horrible to see the passengers to struggle to collect their baggage from the belt. Hope this problem will be over when they shift to New Terminal Building. b) The junk food - which they call snacks. We Mangaloreans are known for the Quality Udupi dishes and in our own town can't we afford to get it?

Let them introduce an option while we book the ticket itself. There should be a provision to pay and order the food well in advance. Those who do not opt for this option, will get the normal free snacks. Manassiddare Margavide.

We IXE's in Saudi Arabia have been taking the trouble of flying to IXE via Bombay, Dxb, BHR etc. for all these years. Looks like its going to be long wait, till we have direct flights to IXE. No Airlines, seems to understand the potential this sector could have for them. Weekly twice or thrice flights, could suffice the requirement and also rid us of all the problems of having to take multiple flights! Is anybody listening????

Regarding Saudi Connection..This is silly excuse given by AIE.. if they can operate up to Bahrain why not to Dammam? It’s hardly 50KMs from Bahrain to Dammam and the fact is that Bahrain flight is running due to the passengers of Dammam. It’s obvious that once they start direct to Dammam, their Bahrain flight will run almost empty…. Regarding Riyadh, considering the distance we had requested AIE to connect Mangalore via Bahrain or Sharjah. There must be some other reason which is stopping them from starting direct flights to Saudi Arabia. they want only Bahrain to Mangalore not from Saudi just provide Dammam to bahrain Bus service

For same date from Dubai to Mangalore Basic fare is 299AED and return fare is 329. So, AIE reducing fare in one sector and fooling the entire gulf Mangalorean community.

First of all appreciate the effort by Daijiworld hope to see more endeavors like this go on. Daijiworld has bud out well to be a voice for South Canara. AIE again seems to be lacking the initiative and will to serve The Indian expatriate. It’s really astonishing to see the illogical reasoning that “Length of the flight” is behind it all for not having a flight to Saudi Arabia. Bahrain is a mere 25 Kms from the Saudi Shore line and 50 Kms from Dammam that proves the irrational explanation for “Length of flight” yet there is not even an effort made to provide a bus service to connect the community in Saudi Arabia even if Bahrain is preferred over for connectivity. AI has yet to learn from its previous experiences and competitive attitude shown by the private sector and guess will never earn the title as a true Airline for the Indian.

Dear Walter, Thanks for the efforts you made to get at least some answers for the problems faced by Mangalore passengers. But the most dissapointing answer was AE flight to Saudi is not in the prority. They are talking about the distance which is untrue. If the flight can come up to Bahrain which is just 50km away from Dammam, flying to Dammam may not be a problem. There is something else (hidden truth)that AE is hidding from Dammam passengers. Their cliam is that Dammam passengers are connected from bahrain. But it is not possible for all the passengers. There is no bus facility, only the car owners can go to Bahrain and travel. Otherwise we have to pay Sr.500/ for taxi up and down. Even ticket booking is a problem from Saudi since there is no agent in Saudi and passnegers have to book through internet and pay through Visa Card. I am sure some other Airlines will definetely look into Dammam - Mnagalore flight. Mr.Walter please forward a request to AE to consider Dammam mangalore flight before someone else take over this potential sector.

Thanks dajiworld, Please forward request from Indian Community, natives of Mangalore and prmises to Cap.P.P.Singh - AIE Managlore, Request for Mangalore-Salalah-Mangalore Flight Service. - There are two AIE flights per week to Calicut/Cochin from Salalah and return. - At present we have to take multiple journeys to reach our homeland. Salalah to Muscat(by Oman Air/ by Road 12hours) and Muscat to Mangalore by AIE which is not connecting. We have to stay all night at Muscat Airport with family and children. Otherwise we have to travel Salalah to Muscat, Muscat to Mumbai and Mumbai to Mangalore to reach our destination, which is most tiring. - At this juncture we politely request you to take necessary steps to exted the Calicut flight up to Mangalore and return at least once in a week. We would like to remind you that on the occasion of first anniversary of Mangalore - Gulf sector service, your office have promised that the first preference will be given to Salalah - Mangalore - Sallah. We hope that your good office will accelerate the necessary steps to start services from Salalah to Mangalore and vice versa without delay making our much awaited request come true. With Thanks and Regds,

My question and sincere request with KSA settled Mangalorean Community people that why can't we ban Air India and AIE travelling directly or indirectly from KSA to India? Why do we always depend on these technical error/faulted flights each time. The problem is not with AI and AIE but the problem is lying with us.

We always think that travelling by AI or AIE will be highly honoured as we are Indians. We feel that "Ye hai hamara Hindustan ka flight". I am the one eye witness for my travelling several time, the way cabin crew are treating the passangers who are sitting in "Y" class. I regret to these flights and strongly condemn and ban to travel too.

The business plan of Air India Express is very Simple. 1. Open the bookings for the entire year in advance so that people can book the tickets in advance which will ensure smooth cashflows to the airline. 2. Increase the fairs as the number of available seats decreases and closer to the travel date so that again they can make more money at the expense of the passengers who did not cough up money by booking early. The other question which was ducked by him is about the difference in fares between the destinations in Kerala and Mangalore. This question has been avoided very tactfully.

Thanks to Mr. Walter and Daijiworld team for being in action following up the concerns of Mangalorean/Gulf based passengers. We can see several realistic useful points in the comments made by Mr. Shareef Moideen and Ms./Mrs. Jude. It is indeed advisable that the D.K. leaders in Saudi Arabia should join together and unitedly follow up the issue of Direct Flight to Mangalore/Saudi Sector with Aviation Ministry and Air India Management and pressurize them. Second option is that the D.K. leaders in Saudi as well as the D.K. leaders in all the other Gulf Countries should join together and pressurize Aviation Ministry to give INTERNATIONAL STATUS to Mangalore Airport so that several airlines can operate to this sector, this will also fulfil the dream of Mangalorean passengers in Saudi Arabia as well as this will also ease the concerns of Mangalorean passengers in other gulf destinations.

It was good to note that AIE O.M. replied to the passengers woes as expressed in DW. Eventhough the fares are reduced, the in priceof ATF is surely one of the reasons for the same. We can see the trend,as the recession hits the world and air traffic s,all the airlines have reduced fares across the board. Dont you think its unfair in AIE to charge extra for the remaining few seats? Being low cost airline, let it charge a uniform fare for the earlybirds as well as the latecomers. Thanks DW for the excellent work

I would suggest to all my friends living and working in Saudi Arabia to focus their energy in getting the International airport status for Mangalore Airport as soon as possible, instead of running after Air India Express. This will solve their problem as many other airlines will then want to fly Mangalore and at the same time it will once and for all end the monopoly of Air India Express which is today swindling gullible Mangaloreans.

Any and every airline worth its salt will condone 1 - 2 kgs of excess baggage, without making a fuss and being rigid, and if Capt Singh is washing his hands of this issue, it means that he is surely taking us for granted. I for one am not impressed by his reply. End to monopoly is the only solution and once this happens you will see the same Capt Singh bending backwards to accomodate. Just wait and see.

Mangalorean community in Saudi Arabia has to wait again to have direct flight from Saudi Arabia to Mangalore. The problem with Mangalorean community in Saudi Arabia is we don’t have dynamic leaders to take up this issue with aviation minister or put pressure on the government. Again, we have to face lots of hassle to reach Mangalore from Saudi Arabia.

May be it is good opportunity for private airlines in India to look Saudi – Mangalore sector at least twice a week from any city in Saudi.
