Sullia, Mar 8: Opposing the issuance of serving of a notice by an advocate on behalf of Samputa Lord Narasimha Swamy Math at Subrahmanya to the government and department of religious endowments, seeking to hand over administration of Subrahmanya temple to the Math, and urging the government not to hand over this temple to the Math, a call for Subrahmanya bandh had been given by Kukke Temple Devotees Welfare Forum on Thursday March 7. The bandh went off peacefully.

Most of the shops and establishments had closed their doors voluntarily from 6 am to 5 pm. Most of the auto drivers and owners, taxis, and private vehicles on hire supported the bandh call. Government buses moved about normally, and nationalized banks, government officers, government and private schools etc functioned as usual. Educational institutions government by the temple were open till afternoon.

An advocate representing Samputa Narasimha Swamy Math had approached the high court, seeking directions against observing the bandh. The court however, had rejected his request but instructed the government not to allow forcible closure of establishments during the bandh period. The police therefore had permitted the organizers to hold peaceful bandh.

The police had warned on Wednesday night itself that the organizers would face legal action if public property is damaged during the bandh period. Additional policemen and home guards were deployed to monitor the situation.

Samputa Narasimha Swamy Math and hotels and shops under its administration were provided with police security.
