Bengaluru: Voter ID not mandatory for voting – election commission

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (EP)

Bengaluru, Mar 11: There is no need of voter ID to vote in the current elections. Voters had to show their voters IDs for voting at election booths so far. Election officer would allow casting of votes only after making sure that the name of the voter is found in the voters’ list. However, voter’s ID is not mandatory any more.

Soon after central election commissioner Sunil Arora held a press conference and announced the dates for elections, Bengaluru election commission commissioner Sanjiv Kumar held a press conference here. Speaking about blue prints of election, he said that showing voter ID is not compulsory during voting.

“It is sufficient if the name of the voter is found in the voters list. The voter should show any one of the documents for identification. If the name in the document matches with the name, picture and the name on the list, he/she can vote. Earlier, voters could not vote if they forget to bring voter IDs. The new policy of the election commission has solved the problem.”
