Vatican City, Mar 9: Pope Benedict XVI said Sunday that he will visit "the Holy Land" Israel and the Palestinian territories in May to pray for "the unity and peace of the Middle East".
He told thousands of people gathered in St Peter's Square for weekly prayers that the visit would be from May 8 to May 15.
The pope announced in February that he wanted to go to Israel but the official dates have been held up while a controversy has mounted over the lifting of the excommunication of a British bishop who denied that Jews were killed in Nazi gas chambers.
