Mangalore, Apr 17: Veteran writer Prof Amurt Someshwar expressed the view that there is a need to create political consciousness among the people of all the classes of the society, particularly the villagers, dalits etc. He was speaking after inaugurating the workshop, 'Election and Democracy'  by Peoples' Union for Democracy here on Thursday April 16.

"Most of the people who cast their votes, do not have a clear idea about the purpose of their voting and what basic traits the people representing them should have. There is a need to make them realize the importance of developing this consciousness," Someshwar felt.

The candidate, to be fit to be elected, should have knowledge on local and national issues, history of the country and cultural awareness. They should be able to sense the minds of the people and it would be good if they know several lanaguages, he added. Amrut Someshwar also urged the political parties not to blow minor issues into election issues and give priority to provide basic amenities to the people.

He requested the people to think about the future of the country if they elect candidates who openly pose threats of chopping off hands, heads etc.

"Manifestoes of the political parties are now being taken as bundles of beautiful lies. Is it possible for a government to supply rice at Rs 2 a kilogram to crores of its citizens? Can any government provide employment to all? Exaggerated promises like these find a mention in the election manifestoes of several political parties. Instead of these, the parties should come out with concrete plans to create employment, minimize pollution of land, water and air and provide security to the country," he urged.

Mangalore University Christ Study Chair head Fr John Fernandes presided. Karnataka Komu Saharda Vedike state secretary K L Ashok delivered the introductory address. Mohammed Kakkinje welcomed. Suresh Bhat and Anwar Sadat were present.
