Chikmagalur, Apr 18: "Nine contingents of para military forces are being dispatched to naxal-infested regions to ensure peaceful polling. Patrolling has been reinforced both during the day and the night, to detect illegal transportation of cash and goods," said district deputy commissioner R Narayanaswamy and superintendent of police Nagaraj, at a joint press conference held here on Friday April 17.

In addition to 100 additional police personnel, armed reserve force, anti-naxal force and local policemen will ensure peace and order during the polling, they added and requested the citizens to exercise their franchise without any apprehensions.

"In the areas where naxal movement has been active, 15 inspection centres have been opened. The movement of goods and cash not supported by records are not being allowed. In these areas, steps have been taken to encourage people to freely cast their votes. The station house officers of every police station have been asked to patrol the areas and oversee arrangements personally. All these steps are aimed at removing a sense of fear if any the people living in these villages might be nursing," they explained.

As there is a likelihood of cash and other items being illegally transported being used as lure in the election, the officers said, they had convened a meeting of merchants and explained to them about the election code of conduct. Out of the 13 code-related complaints received in the district so far, none have been proved so far, they revealed.

Decoration of vehicles should be in such a way as not to tamper with the basic structure of the vehicles. With permission, the flag of a particular party can be hoisted on each vehicle. In case of alliance, one flag each of the constituent parties can be hoisted, they added.

It was also informed, that several complaints about the mistakes in the voter identity card and voter rolls have been received and that at this point of time, it is impossible to set them right. "Steps would be taken to address the problems after the election," they assured.
