Bangalore: Rama Jois Opposes Glorification of Tippu Sultan

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, May 11: Rajya Sabha member M Rama Jois stressed that Tippu Sultan had never fought for the freedom of the land. "The inscription on his sword says that the sword is meant to kill non-Muslims," he explained. He was speaking at the 'Basava Jayanti' programme organized by Bharat Vikas Parishat, for the release of a work titled 'Hindu Dharma' authored by researcher Dr M Chidanandamurty on Sunday May 10.

"Tippu always fought to expand his empire and not for the freedom of India. Still, he is being glorified in the country unnecessarily," he opined. Jois criticized an industrialist for taking pride in buying Tippu's sword in an auction and projecting the same as a great achievement. He felt, many do not know that the sword, as per the words engraved on it, was meant specifically to kill non-Muslims.

"Those who brag about secular principles are cheaters. Secularism is intertwined in Hinduism and the Hindu way of life. Indians are not prepared to lend an ear to endless advices on secularism. Secularism will survive in the country, only as long as Hindus are in majority. Those who advise the Hindus to be secular are dishonest," he felt.

Jois advocated that the religious conversions taking place in the country are breaking houses and the society simultaneously. The anti-conversion laws that are in force in Madhya Pradesh and Orissa states had been upheld by the Supreme Court bench of five judges. There is a need to bring about a strong anti-conversion law to ban religious conversions, he reiterated.

Swami Harshanandaji of Ramakrishna Ashram, who released the said book, opined that the situation has turned worse because of aggressiveness and atrocities. He felt, the work to conserve Indian religion should be continued relentlessly.

Author of the book Dr M Chidanandamurty analyzed that the Indian religion alone has been conceptualized on the basis of democratic principles. He added that all the other religions are based on the concept of dictatorial principles. He argued that worshipping of multiple Gods, existence of several religious scriptures, castes etc., aim at the welfare of every one, as preached in the hymn, 'Sarve Jana Sukhino Bhavantu'.

When karunanidhi criticizes Rama or Hinduism it does not generate much heat. When GOI says Ramasethu is not a national monument there is hardly a murmur. But every time some one says something about Tipu there are few flag bearers who immediately start an agitation ! This is a disturbing trend in a Democracy and against the freedom of speech. If the people are so sure that the statements are contemptuous why cannot they sue them ? For the record the engravings on the handle of Tipu''s Sword states: "The Victorious sabre is lightening for the destruction of the unbelievers. Heider, the Lord of the faith , is victorious for my advantage.

And, moreover, he destroyed the wicket race who were unbelievers. Praise be to him, Who is the lord of the worlds. Thou art our Lord, support us against the people who are unbelievers. He to whom the Lord giveth victory, prevails over all. Oh Lord, make him victorious, who promoteth the faith of Muhamad. Confound him, who refuses the faith of Muhamad and withhold us from those who are so inclined. The Lord is predominant over his own works. Victory and conquest are from the Almighty. Bring happy tidings , oh Muhamad, to the faithful for God is the kind protector and is the most merciful of merciful. If God assists thee, thou will prosper.

May the Lord God assist thee, Oh Muhamad, with might victory". UNQUOTE: Definitely this is not secular ! Unbelievers alluded here are Hinuds.

Those opposing Jois are not able to address even single issue that he mentioned. They are rather using escapism and saying let us not worry about that now etc. So when you want to glorify him, you want history! but when history shows that he was not secular you want to ignore it. But please note that people have observed that History repeats itself. Appeal to people like Lydia: Please read the history well and understand the problems your comunity faced under Tippu. Don''t let recent happenings blind you from seeing the larger picture. Also Kiran, please don''t address Rama Jois like you address a career politician. He built a career as a Judge retiring as Judge of the highest court of the country. Especially don''t tell him to read history. Read history yourself and if there are any points that Jois told is wrong, please post it so that all of us know that. None of the posts here have been able to refute even one point raised by Jois. That says a lot!!

Mr. Jerome, Mangalore - What you say - "Tippu was not a good king for all" - I fully agree. He destroyed 27 out of 29 Churches in Canara. He disturbed? even killed Christians is correct. But they ran away from coastal and hid in Ghats for that reason is doubtful. Why they should run closer to him towards Mysore? Those who live in Ghats might have been the people migrated for livelyhood as working labourers in Tea or Coffee Plantations and settled there later on. Some went there as Labour Supplers "Writers". After Tippu''s death many went there to work as Labourers, Mistrys, Super-in-tendents and Managers under British people. Some might have got that land when British left India. Konkani speaking people in Kodagu are some of those surviving people returned from Srirangapatna captivity retained by the Kodagu King for their knowledge in agriculture. Others who converted to Islam in captivity were released by Tippu but they did not return to Mangalore but settled in that vicinity. So there are Konkani speaking Muslim in Srirangaptna area till today. Tippu could only convert and gave new religion to them but he could not give them new language. Tippu did fight against British but that was not to unite India as a whole but only for his survival. If driving foreigners out was his sole idea how and why he was friendly with French? It may not be important now but facts can not be ignored.

Rama Jois is speaking at Basava Jayanti and he ignored the church bombers of Basava followers. Jerome, Mangaore, Tippu disturbed christians at that era because he felt that Catholics of his Kingdom supported the British, eventhough Catholics were sandwiched between these two, as British considering Catholics as people of Mysore from one side and Tippu believing them as supporters of British from the other end. Now it is history and it is better to ignore as we are living in independent INDIA.

Mr.Ram Jois, All the rulers throughout the Indian history did the same thing-expansion of their kingdoms, whether it is Tippus, Moghals, Shivaji or anyone. While one set of rulers are heroes for someone, they are villains for some others. For example, Tippu is hero for some people whereas villain for others, Shivaji is hero for Hindus but villain for Muslims, and the list goes on. What about Maharajas of Mysore? Great patriotic heroes for you? They were the slaves of British , are we not still glorifying them during Dasara festival?

If Tippu intended to kill Muslims, would he have preferred Hindus as his close ministers? Only based on the carvings on his sword can you conclude about him? (I do not know what is carved on the sword). You need to go through the history books again, do not read only those books which your heart accepts, read books which your brain can accept, if it is still there. I know that I cannot expect any logical thinking from you at this age and by looking at the associations you have, but still do not be idiotic, you are a member of Parliament.

I request Mr. Rama Jois not to bring some controversial issues now, as the need of the hour is Unity of all Communities. Tippu Sultan was good to some people and bad to some, but this is not the time to talk about it. Better we ignore the comments of Mr. Rama Jois.

Well.. Well.. the very sword was on display at the Wallace Collection, No. 1 Manchester Square, London. At an auction in London in 2004, the industrialist-politician Vijay Mallya purchased the sword of Tippu Sultan and some other historical artifacts, and brought them back to India for public display after nearly two centuries.

So, how will Rama Jois deal with Mr. Mallya now ? Whats is this all about ? Cheap publicity or is he really concerned about Indian history (like Mr. Mallya) irrespective of the religion ?
