Mangalore, May 16: “The knowledge one gets through graduation should be converted to wisdom. Health sciences like nursing need wisdom to serve mankind”, said Dr Ramananda Shetty, vice-chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore.
 
Dr Shetty was speaking at the graduation ceremony of Athena Institute of Health Sciences (AIHS). He said, “Nursing graduates or diploma holders should have wisdom, professional values, and confidence, when treating a patient as they are going to be members of teams which will save lives”.

Appreciating Athena Institute and other institutes in the district for quality education, he said, “Compared to other states, the overall demand for the health science field is declining with quality and standard of education. But this district has become a hub for health science education with these values”.    
 
MSc nursing course in the institute were inaugurated by Krishna Palemar, district-in-charge minister. He said, “The service of the graduates is also needed in rural areas to help develop those regions. Improving rural areas will make the nation strong”. 
 
The 36 BSc students and 43 GNM students took the oath of professional ethics after receiving their certificates from the chief guests.
 
Sr Ann Rose D’Almeida, principal, AIHS, read out the annual report of the institute. Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director, Fr Muller’s Charitable Institutions, was the guest of honour.
 
R S Shettian, chairman, AIHS, presided over the ceremony and secretary Asha Shettian was  also present. Cultural programmes were also held as part of the  ceremony.
