Udupi, May 18: 'Talamaddale Week -2009' was held at the Rajangan of Sri Krishna Math here, on Sunday May 17.

The event was jointly organized by Shri Paryaya Puttige Mutt, Kannada and cultural department and Yakshagana Kalaranga.

Presiding over a convention of Talamaddale artistes and organizers, titled ‘Talamaddale expectations’, veteran journalist A Eshwaraiah opined, it is impossible for an artiste to be lost in the role he dons. An artiste should always be aware that he is enacting a role and he is not the role he is depicting. He should be ever vigilant and even though he should be emotionally involved with the role, the emotional attachment should never be stretched beyond limits, he opined.

The convention was held as part of the decennial celebrations of Yakshagana Kalaranga.

Around 50 years ago, the Artadharis were in a quandary over creating certain situations. Sometimes, they actually brought food to depict feast and poured water to create a situation in which attempts to awaken Kumbhakarna are are made. After using different props to create the scenes, they came to the conclusion, that voices of the artistes have the capacity to make or mar situations. So, in the present-day Talamaddale, killing a person or bringing him back to life, gets done through sentences uttered by the Arthadharis, he explained.

Yakshagana stage performance and Talamaddale are the two different forms of the art, which can not be combined. Stage performance is a play where rhythm, pitch of the voice and knowledge of musical beats is very important. In Talamaddale, none of these are required. Just uttering what the verses sung mean, is expected of a Yakshagana artiste while creativity and deep knowledge of an artiste gain in importance in Talamaddale, he noted.

Prof M L Samaga delivered the introductory address on the occasion.

Shidhar D S, Kinnigoli Talamaddale organizer, Radhakrishna Kalchar, Artadhari and H Shridhar Hande of Saligrama Makkala  Mela presented essays on the occasion.

Narayana Hegde compered the programme.
