Karkala, May 20: The World Telecommunications and Information Society Day were observed at Shambhavi seminar hall of NMAM Institute of Technology Nitte on Tuesday May 19.

The event was organized by the local centres of Engineers’ Association.

Delivering a lecture on 'Children's Safety in Cyberspace', Dr Niranjan Chiplunkar, NMAM Institute of Technology Nitte vice-principal, noted that of late, a large number of innocent young boys and girls are unknowingly becoming victims of the world of cyber crimes. The cyber, which was meant to spread knowledge, is being used by vested interests by exploiting its drawbacks, he noted.

The websites which are supposed to open endless opportunities to earn knowledge and information are being put to misuse to a large extent. The criminals get access to the photographs, information about the family background, financial status and social status that the students routinely provide through the internet, which are then used to threaten or manipulate the behaviour of the children.

Hence, the teachers and parents should shoulder the responsibility of keeping a watch on the children. Instead of lap tops, they should be encouraged to use computers. In place of cyber cafes, the children should work on the computers at home. The elders should keep a tab on the internet sites they visit and observe the behavioural pattern changes, shift in interests and movements after they start using the internet facilities. The children should be made to use internet to gain knowledge through good websites. It is the responsibility of elders to ensure that the children move on the right path, he warned.
