Mangalore, May 22: Copious rains poured down on the twin-districts and also parts of the malnad districts bordering the Western Ghats like Shimoga, Kodagu and Chickmagalur on the intervening night between Thursday and Friday. The rain continued almost the entire night and temperatures declined. At the same time, it brought with it miseries for several people.

Because of the wind, rain, lightning etc., Arabian Sea has turned rough, blocking the fishermen from venturing into the sea for fishing. It brought relief to farmers and those who were finding it hard to get enough drinking water but at the same time, snapped electricity connections, uprooted trees and caused the roads to become slippery, creating problems for many others. Scores of auspicious functions and programmes are lined up to be held on Friday and the rain has created an apprehension among the minds of those involved, about the extent of adverse affect their programmes would suffer because of the rain, if it continues during the day on Friday May 22.

The rain also has signalled about the fast approaching monsoon. The railway has announced rescheduling of its trains running on Konkan Railway Route, in view of impending monsoon, with effect from June 10. The railway department has been running its trains at a slow pace during the monsoon months on the Konkan railway section because of the dangers posed by the uneven terrain and hillocks that line the railway tracks, which are fraught with the danger of suffering landslides during the rainy season.
